<t>Indeed, this sort of protectionist crap (i.e. the farm bill, the steel tariffs, ......) was the first straw in making me into a vote against Bush. Of course now that I've been looking for others there are too many to list. I strongly hope Kerry takes the moral high ground on business issues (in p...

<t>But surely that argument could be made about any class of criminal, and the idea of throwing away the key on shoplifters or vandals is ridiculous.Society's attitude towards rape is a vicious circle. It is common knowledge that rape psychologically traumatizes victims, and so victims of rape (and ...

"That one account is solely responsible for the current level of the S&P."

This theory is quite popular with Chicago floor traders right now. I guess people like to think that there is a reason deeper than market maturity for why locals don't make the money they used to.

beat the dealer

From a historical point of view, absolutely. However, if you want to learn more practical techniques of card counting, look to Arnold Snyder or Stanford Wong.

<t>Interesting anecdote about the perils of forgetting to change your RNG seed:QuoteOne of gambling's great folk tales comes out of the Casino de Montreal--and it's entirely true. It is the case of a young computer whiz who, shortly after the casino opened, noticed something unusual about the keno g...

Hitchens goes after Michael Moore: Unfairenheit 9/11 - The Lies of Michael Moore

<t>I also enjoyed the article. Hitchens is great at tearing someone a new asshole without purely spewing vitriol. I mean, the vitriol is there, but more as a liberally applied condiment than as the main meal.I've been wanting to buy one of his books, but I haven't yet found a subject that grabs me. ...

Banach space

<t>I don't think that's a reason to give up trying to get some intuition, though. Even if you can't visualize the whole thing at once, it helps to visualize its local structure, or at least some of its properties (e.g. Cauchy sequence convergence.)Of course, visualizing a "Banach space" is a little ...

No hitters, perfect games and other rare events

QuoteNolan Ryan's seven still blows my mind.Agreed. That may be the most fascinating outlier in baseball "statistics".On another note; I love the idea of a perfect game, but why in the hell do they show them on ESPN Classic? Mmmm... 2.5 hours of routine ground balls!
