places to work in edinburgh

both RBS and HBOS have decent sized operations in london, i'm not sure how much stuff they have in edingbourgh as well, but of the two, RBS is big, established and pretty good, but HBOS is smaller, possibly more dynamic and exciting and seems to have a good vibe about it, in london at least...

the grainy chart

<t>The number of upticks in the bag follows a markov chain style walk with a transition matrix ( i claim, maybe wrong) like this:[1/2 1/8 0 0 0 ][1/2 1/2 1/4 0 0 ][ 0 3/8 1/2 3/8 0 ][ 0 0 1/4 1/2 1/2 ][0 0 0 1/8 1/2 ]the steady state vector, x st Mx=x for this M is 1/16 1/4 3/8 1/4 1/16 (T)this repr...

The Matchstick Problem

<t>QuoteOriginally posted by: mikebellSome of you are complicating things way too much. You have to understand the importance of the precision of the measurement from the start! Solving for infinite is then a lot easier and more intuitive. Think about the probabilities for a single matchstick. What ...

The Matchstick Problem

<t>my reasoning was similarish- you snap the match somewhere on the interval (0,1/2] and then the ratio of longest to shortest is L-1/(L) for some L in (0,1/2].the expected ratio would thus be: (err, can't do latex)int (2*(1+1/L)dL on (0,1/2)or something similar, which is an integral that doesn't ha...

Bentley Competition

the cleverest bit about this whole game is that, by putting something vaguely mathematical into it, they have convinced me to enter a competition i have no hope of winning that i wouldn't usually look twice at.

(probability question) how to play this gamble?

<t>regular odds at the bookies, i.e. 7 to 1, mean you get your stake back plus the seven, so i think the terminology here is misleading but:with the payoffs you describe, 1:2, 1:3 and 1:6, note that:1/2+1/3+1/6 = 1the general condition is if if sum(1/odds) <1 an arb is possible, =1 then you have bre...
