Question to PhD's of all sorts...

<t>it seems your real challenge is getting accepted at a top school. after that, at least in the US, coursework will help you correct any lack of background you may have. but being accepted wont be easy. one thing you may think of doing is to support yourself in the first one or two semesters. the r...

probability problem

<t>Consider a discrete random walk (i.e. a binary tree). It goes up or down with probability p and q:=1-p respectively. Call p(t) the position at time t. Thus, at time t+1 the position is either p(t)+1 or p(t)-1. At time t = n > 0, what is the probability of the position p(n) being a new one, i.e., ...

MFE vs. MBA

<t>there is very little evidence that the MBA skills one gets is relevant for his/her career advancement. the MBA is therefore a sorting process to select overachievers that will basically learn on the job. naturally the networking comes as a crucial component. moreover the MBA is only worth it if i...

MFE at Berkeley or Phd in CS

<t>if you go for the MFE you'll always have the option of going for a finance-related PhD afterwards. However, moving to finance after a CS PhD is more complicated though certainly not impossible. If you're 100% sure that an academic career is what you want go for the PhD. Otherwise bear in mind tha...

base salary for associate

<t>your compensation is somewhat correlated with how many people work under your supervision. from that viewpoint, MBA's should make more than quants as they are managers. besides, quants are usually immigrants from overseas (at least in the US) and as such, it is easier for them to settle for a low...
