Importance of Bayesian Statistics

<t>QuoteThis kind of modeling is nice in principle, but doing inference is slow. Being nonparametric means that you have a much bigger space to explore for inference. True speed is a problem, but some recent developments in improving computational efficiency shows promise. With nonparametric modelli...

where do ex quants go?

<t>The question you should be asking yourself is what kind of job you want to have when you conclude your education. A PhD makes sense if you want to consider the possibility of being an academic. You may pursue a PhD and then decide along the way to pursue a different path than being a professor. T...

where do ex quants go?

<t>QuoteSuccess is not porpotional to hard work work.People spend 5 years of their youths in PhD to end like this. It seems PhD is not a path to riches. This is why it is important you do the PhD for the right reasons. Spending 5 years of ones youth on a PhD shows commitment from an early age which ...

Importance of Bayesian Statistics

The recent developments in machine learning involve the use of Nonparametric Bayesian statistics where the form of the prior is not parametric hence closer to reality. Algo trading will use these types of techniques more in future. SG

where do ex quants go?

<t>QuoteWhat I like to know is: what about those who come to wall street and, after a year, leave? Leave either because they didn't like their work or because their work did not like them. Where specifically does an ex phd and ex quant go next? Flipping burgers at MCDs ? or end up doing another PhD/...

Brainteaser success rate

<t>I find with brainteasers there is a predictable pattern to them the more you do. However, one can question if getting a higher % of BTs right implies higher intelligence and creativity. Still as mentioned in the Crack book on "Heard on the Street : Quantitative Questions from Wall Street Job Inte...

<t>QuoteIn any case, people just have to get out of the "spoon feeding" model of education, in which you are given a list of books to read and then if you read them you are educated. Eighty percent of the work (and the fun) is to figure out what the right books to read are.More common is that studen...

Importance of PhD graduation date for job/internship hunting

Delaying the PhD graduation may not be a bad thing right now. Last thing you want is to graduate and end up unemployed with no medical insurance either. I am not sure if taking more than the average 5 years to finish a full-time PhD will be perceived positively by recruiters.SG

<t>Quote Your info (other than SSN, DoB) is very easy to find online. Simple as one google search. Would advise you to be VERY careful about what info you post online and how it can be traced back to you. In a few days or hours, your question on wilmott.com will be indexed on google and anyone doing...

<t>QuoteWell, don't forget that there are bus stops on the way. People are getting off the bus, others are getting on. You might be off at the next stop, you never know in these times. Then you wouldn't be happy if someone that doesn't know you ridicules you. In addition if you miss a bus, there is ...

<t>QuoteSuppose you worry enough about compensation to be troubled by the fact that somebody just finishing their PhD will earn as much as you would in finance. If you worry this much about compensation, would you really turn down a starting job in finance that pays $90,000 - 150,000 a year just bec...

Why do so many people..

Perhaps it's too much of an ask to think like a *good* statistician/applied mathematician, programmer along with strong people/communication and finance skills. I would estimate the subset of such people in the PhD/MBA camp is around 1% or less.SG

<t>QuoteOk, thanks! I see your point. It is true in case if you are trying to find a postdoc close to the subject of your PhD. In applied mathematics for example it does not really matter as you might end up doing completely different things during postdoc life - here the quality of an university is...

<t>QuoteIt helps because you can use alumni associations to network, and some places will target certain schools for road shows and work closely with career services. However, in many places it doesn't really change whether a person is invited to an interview. This is particularly true for Ph.D.'s.T...

<t>QuoteThat being said, more emphasis is placed on where your PhD and BSc came from then where you did your PostDoc.Yes sadly this seems to be the case with some institutions, but I have yet to see any conclusive evidence linking university of degree to work performance. I guess it acts as a initia...
