Re: Gallows humour

Little known side effect: if you watch more than 1hr of corona virus tv coverage --- your head will explode. Also watch out for this problem with your tv.
I drank five Coronas in front of a mirror. Sorry, guys.

Re: Is the cure worse than the disease?

In the UK 1,000 people are diagnosed with cancer every day. That's a lot of people who might not be seen by a doctor for months, whose treatment might be delayed, and eventually some will die from something that could have been cured.

Re: How should we deal with the coronavirus pandemic?

What would you have as background? I have PW Vols 1-3 and Collector on one 'background' (5 bookshelves in total). And I threw out ...

Re: Is everyone ok?

I've perfected my "cups" routine. (You'll only know what I mean if you have young children.) We could organize a simultaneous performance.

Re: Is the cure worse than the disease?

We are taking chances with: 1. Economy (and thus lives) by prioritising lives 2. Lives by prioritising the economy 3. Live by trying out cures before all the usual testing But what I haven't seen yet is taking chances with reinfection. I.e. Give those who are recovered a certificate, stamp in passpo...

Re: Models for Covid-19

Neil Ferguson, the scientist who convinced Boris Johnson of UK coronavirus lockdown, criticised in past for flawed research https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2020/03/28/neil-ferguson-scientist-convinced-boris-johnson-uk-coronavirus-lockdown-criticised/ Mad Cow predictions at the time: 136,000. It's the benign-looking mutation on the left that you should worry about.

Re: Models for Covid-19

Here's a nice modelling study (Univ. Washington) cited in my local paper (LA Times): Forecasting COVID-19 impact on hospital bed-days, ICU-days, ventilator days and deaths by US state in the next 4 months No differential equations, just fitting a sigmoidal-type ( actually a CumNormal) to the cumula...

Re: How should we deal with the coronavirus pandemic?

Apparently they are now doing this in Germany. Why I am not PM of the UK has always been a mystery to me.

Re: How should we deal with the coronavirus pandemic?

I said this weeks ago that we’ll all get stamps in our passports. Even longer queues at the DMV/State ID. The US does love paperwork!

Re: Models for Covid-19

For later (just noting it here): Make transmission rate a function of number of people on the streets. And then have number of people on the streets depend on death rate. That makes the coupling between the equations stronger. I.e. brings H into the coupled equations. But not for now!

Re: Stupid question of the day

Not a stupid question at all! 1. Because if I want to irritate people with my stupid opinions then I’ve got my family. And when they block me I’ve got the wilmott.com forum to fall back on. 2. At my age I have to be careful with my blood pressure. 3. I have my ego under control. (But I do browse Twi...
