<t>not wanting to get formal education in finmath, is it possible to attain the same knowledge base as someone who does an MSc through reading books on my own? Apart from obvious advantages (formal grades + official diploma) i would not want to spend 10k+ on something that i could do in m own time.....

DCFC,Whereas I'd agree with most of your points, I'd take exception to your last sentence. Americans reserve the rights to differentiate between "terrorists" and "freedom fighters", which in its own right fuels further terrorist acts towards US and its interests.
