Re: Those productive french

OMG!!!!!!! What can one say? This deserves its own thread. But no, that would be cruel. Jeez. Maybe I'm overreacting? Ok, breathe deeply, Paul. Drink some water. Knock one off. That's better. But he lives in Switzerland! SWITZERLAND!!!!  I am trying the thought-experiment of imagining my supervisor...

Re: Those productive french

I am a big fan of Didier Sornette's book "Critical Phenomena in Natural Sciences", and also got a lot from the  more popular "Why Stock Markets Crash".  However, I was a bit unnerved coming across his 2012 paper  Optimization of brain and life performance: Striving for playing at...

Re: Trump -- the last 100 days

The UK has a good system. You basically pay an extra income tax after you graduate. If you don't earn enough, you don't pay. It all gets cancelled when you reach 55. But kids complain about that, too. Everyone likes free stuff! Had a good system. Until the current government started to dabble in th...

Re: Grammar Time!

Words that end in  able  are generally the words that can stand-alone without suffix; while words that end in  ible  are words that can not stand alone. If a word ends in a single “ e ” drop the  “e” before adding “able.” So are those words that cannot  stand-alone without suffix,  ible-able?

Re: The Man Who Solved the Market: How Jim Simons Launched the Quant Revolution

How do these high frequency guys with multiple subfunds with mixed internal/external ownership participation and who want  to remain as secretive about their portfolio composition as possible, avoid the obvious conflict of interest concerns? Would an auditor provide any assurances of best execution...

Re: The Man Who Solved the Market: How Jim Simons Launched the Quant Revolution

It feels like they found a leak in the plumbing of the market, and figured out where to put the bucket to catch the money. Then, it's just a matter of concocting a cover story, and making millions of trades a year seems like a good one. I actually doubt that the "alpha" source has anythin...

I found daveangel's comments on the subject interesting, especially around the relative performance of funds open and closed to outsider investors.

Re: What is Borisism?

We even don't how it should be spelled!
And should there be any expectation that Borisism might mean the same thing from one month to the next?

Re: Trump -- the last 100 days

hilarious.

I wonder if  the people who programmed in the coordinates for the US's 52 targets do better.
Hopefully they are like the klutz who put their "where is Iran" dot in the Pacific ocean. They may be a chance to get to see Persepolis yet....

Re: Predictions for 2020

Were you a rugby player? Up to 45 years ago I used to do many sports (kind of all rounder). After that, only judo, condition, jujutsu and that's it. And at 67 I see no reason to stop, No running, cycling, weights, tennis etc.  Only at school, deep into last century... The thing with the springboks ...

Re: Predictions for 2020

In those days, rugby players weighed 80 kg. Now they weigh 120 kg and look like Charles Atlas. Must be the water... .....in the water indeed.  One rugby fact that I find depressing, is that of the apartheid-healing all-conquering RSA team in '95, of the 15 guys who took the field in the final,  4 t...

Re: Trump -- the last 100 days

USA didn't bomb Kyoto in WW2 *because* it was an important cultural site. Now Trump wants to "punish" Iran by destroying their cultural artefacts. Who else was doing that in war? ISIS and Nazis. Did the Nazis do that? I thought they were earmarking all the nice historic places everywhere ...
