Re: understanding screw torque

I think I figured it out. A gearhead with a low ratio will not burn a lot of energy just spinning. But the worm has a bad angle on the gear, so it is not very efficient at low speed. So a 10:1 gearhead might have a stall torque that is no greater than the full speed torque. But as the ratio goes up....

understanding screw torque

Looking at different worm gearheads, I notice that "full load" spinning torque does not double when the gear ratio doubles. I assume this is because when the screw turns twice as far to spin the gear the same distance, it generates twice as much friction and heat. I have two questions: 1) ...

gas powered robot?

My neighbor stopped mowing lawns so I decided to build a robot. For many tasks including cleaning and painting. My requirements included 1) be sturdy enough to carry and guide a weed whacker 2) be able to move quickly on smooth terrain 3) be able to go up the various types of stairs and uneven land ...

your Green Energy dollar at work

I thought this company was up the street from me, but I looked again and the address says Padiham. http://www.solxenergy.com/index.php/how-it-works Can anyone tell how much of this is a scam and how much is a joke? The punch line is they supposedly install solar panels in air conditioning units, to ...

Re: Reading linux device from file from device tree overlay without 300-microsecond overhead

They say in Unix "everything is a file." So I assume this is some sort of interface by which various drivers try to behave like a file. But really this is annoying if I have to open them like a file it is crazy and I can't imagine they ran a phone system in New Jersey that way.

Reading linux device from file from device tree overlay without 300-microsecond overhead

There is a file which I can cat in linux, and it tells me the state of a pin based on the new device tree overlay. Using C++, I can stream the pin state to it when I configure it as an output. But if I fopen and read from the file, it gives me a character, then a newline I think, then an end of file...

Re: nicotine addiction

Here is another fact that can be mixed in with the mythology of nicotine: I have smoked one time in three months, and I definitely am at least three or four pounds skinnier than the beginning of those three months when I was smoking constantly. I still think nicotine probably reduces a person's impu...

nicotine addiction

I have a different take on nicotine addiction. For something like four or five or six years, I pushed myself to smoke. I think I first did it on the theory I would be skinnier, which is healthier, and waste less time eating. Anyway, I had to change what I smoked every few months, when I got sick of ...

Re: Earth to end in about a month

My friend says the craft are probably bigger than a combined 2500 feet, and reflecting our own sun, simply from the direction of Tabby's star, to create the observed increased brightness of Tabby's star when the motion of the Earth carries us across their path. This would make sense if they were tra...
