Classical music threat...

July 13th, 2005, 6:02 am

I went to an RnB/Hip Hop club on Saturday night. The music was so loud that I could feel my eardrums vibrating...

That's interesting. Was it a pleasant experience? Or do you prefer classical music concerts a la The Proms?

I listen to all kinds of music - although for a long time it has been mostly classical/jazz I have to admit. But the vibrating eardrums really intrigued me - is it just me, or is it done purposely? As a health preventing measure, I left as soon as it was socially acceptable, spending until then most of my time at the bar in the room next to the dance floor.

I believe heavy metal and other loud rock concerts can make one's eardrums vibrate. I'm not sure if it is done on purpose but more to achieve the desired volume (i.e. 11). Some of my old friends used to wear earplugs to avoid tinnitus. Perhaps some of our older forum members could throw some more light on this unquestionably interesting subject . What age are you, by the way?

Having attended quite a lot experimental electronic and industrial music live events my eardrums became older than I am, listening to the very first Caruso recordings I feel older than my eardrums. However, in my age, mpeg format is nor bad. Becoming older you usually "loose" the high frequencies (becoming less dog alike?)

From the opera "Rigor Mortis"

Victor Borge was a real threat to classical music.

Take it from an active amateur musician, there is an amazing invention called ear plugs. Don't leave home without them. I use them frequently, most recently to check out the Japanese cult band Acid Mothers Temple. Very trippy and very loud.

I cried like a beluga at the Tosca performance last night. My Melania Trump-inspired smokey eye turned into a cross between a sad panda and Heath Ledger's Joker - a terrifying sight. (I finally visited Italy this year and it probably gave the story a more realistic setting.)

Apropos heavy make-ups:

I told my mother-in law that I bought 2 tickets for Pavorotti. She asked me if it was for one week or 2 weeks.
BTW any Trump/BREXIT folk at the opera?

A crime, almost.

I refuse to go to opera if it's not in Italian or Russian.

I hear what you're saying, but translating librettos is not so unusual (they've done for the last two or three centuries in the US and UK, afaik) and ENO's translations are rather good. They will never sound like native speakers anyway (my opinion after I saw La traviata at La Fenice).
Anyway, you refused to go to Proms with me. tw, who disappeared from the forum completely, also bailed on me :-/ Since he mentioned some eye/health problems, he's forgiven, but you are not.

I think we've largely got over it. Yet another brief candle :-)

I did not get a formal written letter.  My religion forbids me attending such frivolous event. Let me guess, you like Gilbert and O'Sullivan as well??

he's forgiven, but you are not.
I was going to invite you to my upcoming Solstice bonfire with mead, metal music and roasted boar (and bore) but not sure now ...

You weren't going to invite me, you were waiting for an excuse not to. I know all the classics from the men menu.
