venice is talking about introducing a "tourist tax" i.e. an entry fee
The fee will vary between €2.50 and €10 per person, with exemptions for students, regional residents and people only staying in the city briefly for work or business reasons.
it's an awful long time since I visited venice, but it looks a little crowded nowadays

Eco-tourism is destroying the planet; by 2030 it is estimated no one will live in Venice. 
Amsterdam is also full of budget tourists.
