Doing research as a front office quant

A question for FO quants: how often did you have the opportunity to do some original research (defined as producing anything which would merit writing it up and posting on SSRN without making a fool of yourself)?

In my case I would say roughly zero. My boss once told me that one thing I did would qualify as an MPU. MPU, for those in the know, means minimum publishing unit. I tend to think it's about 0.5 MPU's.I did some research on my own time though. I think as a FO quant research is really only a hobby.

The bloody traders eat me alive sometime..

QuoteOriginally posted by: katastrofaDo you agree that FO experience is helpful in later research?I agree. While working in FO, you encounter so many problems that are worth thinking about, and when you try to find an existing research there is none. You also develop a sense of what is an easy problem and what is not.The question is whether you are able to move from the revenue generating business to the non-revenue generating one.

There are way too many people interested in moving in the other direction.

I meant whether your spouse would approve it :-); whether you can pay your mortgage payment; whether you don't care about the prestige and so on.

Publishing papers may bring you more prestige in your spouse's eyes than bringing more cash.

I work in MV and I hereby confirm that indeed we would have enough free time to do some independent, quality research.- But we don't
