Total compensation for junior hedge fund quant

October 13th, 2014, 7:35 pm

Hi,What's the current market rate in London for the total compensation for a 1st year junior quant with a PhD in one of the bigger hedge funds, such as Winton, AHL, Aspect Capital, etc. ?From what I've heard one can expect £70,000 fixed salary, but how does the bonus look like? I'm aware that this depends on the performance of the fund, so please assume current performance levels which are apparently not that great, at least for CTAs. And obviously it also depends on your personal performance. If you have any infos I would be very grateful to hear about it.Thanks!

I am also very interested in this question.Although, I have heard that the starting salary is less than IBs, and therefore less than £70k.

Total compensation for junior hedge fund quant

One of my friends entered the quant associate program of a large US IB in 2012 and earned 70k fix first year, but I have no idea about bonus. Another friend started in the quant associate program of a Swiss IB and got about 90k in total.I'm not sure about hedge funds, which is why I asked the question. But probably like everyone else who is doing a PhD in Maths or Physics in the UK I have been spammed by various recruiters regarding one certain hedge fund in London and they all promised at least 90k first year, of which I think 70k are fix and 90k sign in bonus. If anyone else know more about hedge fund or IB salaries and bonuses I would love to read about it. Thanks!

1. I think sign on bonuses died long time ago, at least in the City2. I would expect the base salary in a quant hedge fund to be lower than in an IB for comparable position, because the bonus potential is higher in the HF

>and they all promised at least 90k first year, of which I think 70k are fix and 90k sign in bonus. ...how does that arithmetic work? :/1st year quant base is 70 (+/-10). sig on bonuses are still around, but not for starters typically (unless you get relocated and get a lump sum or something).

I would like some information on this as well, please. Particularly, Winton, OxAM, and G-Research. Is it any different for PhD (CS) + ~2.5yrs of university experience (postdoc/research scientist)? Thanks in advance.
