I never read beyond “In the Observer.” I have ordered the book. Looking forward to it.
Am enjoying it so far. And I am usually bored stiff by history and facts. Only criticism is that the font is a bit larger than necessary!

But if you skip the facts part, history can be quite entertaining!

E.g. American movies about WWII.

Facts spoil everything, not just history.

Yes, I notice they’ve been getting in the way of the whole Brexit thing, too.

These twelve Titans, the author's term, examined here are: Peel, Napier, Palmerston, Sleeman, Pugin, Prince Albert, Gladstone, Disraeli, Gordon, Dicey, Grace-the cricketer, and Queen Victoria.

No (Birmingham) captains of industry?? It represents the aristocrat's viewpoint. I don't recognise 5 of the list.
I bet if Jeremy Corbyn had been reviewer then William Morris would be in there. Not to mention Stephenson, Brunel, Faraday, Watt,...

Approach your problem from the right end and begin with the answers. Then one day, perhaps you will find the final question..

Facts are history.
History is a narrative about facts.

Facts carry no meaningful information without the context. Knowing history is understanding the historical context which produced the facts.

I have probably posted this quote before, but it seems too relevant to the current discussion not to insert it: “The future is there, ..., looking back at us. Trying to make sense of the fiction we will have become. And from where they are, the past behind us will look nothing at all like the past we imagine behind us now.”

Or, and I haven’t posted this before but have thought it for a long time, “The future will look back and think, Jeez, what a bunch of hysterical, pampered, crybabies.”
