If you look up the history of the Kleinwalsertal of Austria you will find that for many years it was part of the customs territory of Germany, while never questioning the Austrian nationality of its inhabitants. The reason was quite simple; because of the Alps, the valley could only be accessed from the German side.
So what is he suggesting, that Northern Ireland will only be accessible via Eire?
or that there will be a customs border between the mainland Britain and Northern Ireland?

My counter-proposal is that Eire be in customs union with the UK and Eire will only be accessible via  the UK with a customs border between Eire and mainland Europe.

Eire doesn't want to leave the EU.

Why should Ireland help Britain? Why should anyone help Britain? British problems are very entertaining. The longer they last the more fun we have.

Because Britain helped Europe, twice, in the near past?

In your particular case in three, maybe four generations. In Germany it's easier, two generations will do.
