London/NY market & Australian phDs in finance

<t>Hey Crisky - the reality is Sydney (as a financial education centre) is not London or NYC, so there is always some level of preference for locals. Much the same as you may (or may not) have seen a preference of Sydney/Melbourne MBA's over other Australian city unis. But if you're a good sort and ...

london recruiters

Phil - I know what you mean about the NY HH's. I worked with one a few years ago and they were great. I contacted them recently and they remembered who I was and have continued to be very helpful again. I only hope I can find somewhere similar in London.

I actually have the necessary work visa, but I haven't made any real point of this on the CV - probably best to do that.

london recruiters

<t>So just to help me understand a bit more - I'm not in London but will be there soon. I have contacted a few recruiters without a single response, I just figured they looked at the postcode on the other side of the planet and thought too far, too hard, probably won't come anyway. On the other hand...

Calculus...

<t>I think schools need to promote the use of calculus more effectively. Upon finishing high school and having good results in physics and maths I headed for the engineering degree. I was a bit surprised to see it used for modelling the flow of electrons through a capacitor. Then we moved on to elec...

London Sales and Trading

<t>I realise this is mainly based on opinion but could people give an indication of what sales and trading houses in London are perceived as desirable work places? My idea of "desirable" is flat structure, entrepreneurial, meritocratic, aggressive and those that realise an MBA is not that great and ...

39 X 89 .....and ways to speed up arithmetic skills

<t>when you round both up you're increasing the calculation by 1 lot of 40, 1 lot of 90 and reducing by 1 lot of 1 (eg the extra -1 x -1 you get from adding one to both variables, when you only add 1 to either 39 or 89 (like your first method) it is 1x0. Same as a quadratic:39 x 89 = (90 - 1) x (40 ...

Is it possible to use C++ classes in VBA for Excel?

<t>Wind. Just to clarify - you want to create objects within VBA that are currently defined in classes written in C++? These classes contain vector and matrix structures? One option may be to write an interface that uses ADO recorsets, that way you have a common medium and you can access the C++ code...

Was quant finance just a bubble?

<t>In the time frame of sciences quant finance is a baby. An inexact science it may be, but junior all the same. If you look at when risk was seriously considered quantitatively in markets compared to history of finance there is a big gap. The bubble being discussed is really a catch up period to th...

Yep - looks very much like some sort of tri-state logic (010 012 020 110). Could spend all day figuring out the operations though - the wheel has to have some significance.

Using VB 6 for a standalone spreadsheet app

You could build an ActiveX control of your own that incorporates a Grid, driven by a free database engine - then customise away. Easier and quicker just to buy a thrid party control like XGrid. You can purchase the source code too.

Internships

That was my intention after being accepted for both, but the uni has told me there are less Internships than students currently so I'd have to make a choice and give others a chance. Frustrating but that's how it goes.

Ms in Finance in Australia & NZ

<t>I'm going through the Bond University (Gold Coast, QLD) MFin course and highly recommend it. Being a private uni it's at the higher end of cost scale however (around $32,000), but you've got small classes, 3 semesters per year, so you'll wrap it up quicker. It a pretty demanding schedule though. ...
