To change a job or to change a job role: what is easier?

To move to a higher rated institution may prove difficult. But is it more difficult to change a job role? If I want to see myself in a trader's position in 5 years, is it better now to get a trader's job in an obscure firm or, say, become a programmer in a top institution?

Morgan Stanley, Merrill Lynch, Salomon Smith Barney, Goldman,Sachs...What other banks would you include into this list? Deutsche Bank? UBS Warburg? J.P.Morgan? ?...A few of the above suffered severe losses last year. Are they still as desireable as in mid 90s?

Quant without a Phd

Concidering the opportunity to do PhD while working it is worth taking into account that many don't finish there PhDs in time even working full-time on their theses. Unless you are very devoted to the research and work hard you may expect the part-time PhD to take you 6 years or even more.
