Is it a mistake on this title?

It also depends on where the job is. In some parts of the world (e.g. buy-side in the US), analyst typically is higher, associate is lower. That's different than is typical in, say, Canada.

From Number Theory to Finance

<t>I've made this exact switch (from tenured analytic number theorist to finance). The math doesn't carry over at all, really, but the mathematical maturity and understanding do. What a typical mathematician needs to succeed in finance (that isn't necessary to succeed in mathematics) is several-fold...

How can an academic test the waters?

<t>I sent you a PM - I'm another former (tenured, prof) research mathematician with young kids (two two year-olds and one more due soon!) who now works in finance and is VERY happy with the switch. How much computer work you do depends on the setup of your employer. Some of quants and separate quant ...

Which companies offer quant-type roles in India?

Fidelity's Fixed Income division (which runs the fixed income mutual funds and the money market funds for Fidelity - more than $400B total) is hiring quant associates in Bangalore right now. We already have a quant developer team there that's quite successful.

See now, this is a classic error. You can't boost your Erdos number. You can only lower it.People with Erdos numbers larger than 3 or 4 often make this mistake, to try to pick up babes in bars. "Hey, my Erdos number is 10! His is only 2! Wanna see what I mean?"Daniel

Top twenty US unis

<t>It depends on your speciality. Places that are good in mathematical finance (if that's what you want) are not the same places that are good in, say, number theory. It also depends if you want the places that are really the best in your (academic) interest (the University of Missouri is amazing in...

Self study for Quant positions

One place to look for courses is MIT's Open CourseWare project.. They have very good lecture notes, syllabi, exams, etc. for a large number of investment/business and math topics.Daniel

PhDs not right for the job?

<t>QuoteOriginally posted by: drews26That's interesting, I've heard about people leaving tenured positions in academia for finance (I bet some famous people did that, I know at least one). I personally wouldn't do that. Why is the life of tenured professor worse than a modern day slavery on Wall Str...

PhDs not right for the job?

<t>I'm a PhD in math - I was a tenured math professor, with a great research and grant track record, and I left to do finance.I left largely because while I love teaching and research, I was going crazy working in math departments. They are self-governing, and the people who seek power aren't always...

Without googling, does anyone recognize/know anything about Spark, LP?

<r>I interviewed there once upon a time, in the mid-90s. Cool place, about six people then. I notice that at least one of the founders has moved on (<URL url="http://www.arcturusvc.com/management/frank.html">http://www.arcturusvc.com/management/frank.html</URL> - yes, I did google the people I inter...
