Re: "don't do riddles"

I have some sympathy with the protest as I can't remember things like how to find the length of a string (in any language) either. Of course I know it's something like .len or strlen() or length() and I'll find out when I need it (then promptly forget again). A whiteboard interview where I'm allowed...

Re: Is Hou Yifan right??

Since women to men ration in Iranian team was 3:1 and in Israeli team was 1:8, it's easy to see that tampering with these matches could affect Hou's draws. Anyway, as calculated above by outrun and I, the result is highly unlikely (H0 is that the draws are random). I had a colleague who was an Olym...

Re: Is Hou Yifan right??

Curiously, Hou Yifan and Piorun Kacper have the same numerical rating yet Yifan was assigned the higher rank.  Why?  Had they flipped it, Kacper would have presumably faced a run of female opponents. Just alphabetical probably ... Hou is her surname. Kacper would only have faced the same run of fem...

Re: Is Hou Yifan right??

Yes! Tonight I'll split it by round. I've read somewhere that in the "Swiss system" you initiate pairing based on ranks (the off disgonal lines?) and in the next rounds you let winners of the previous round play losers of the previous round. If the observed pairing becomes explainable the...

Re: Is Hou Yifan right??

Hou Yifan is wrong on numerous levels but first you need to know some background. The annual Gibraltar tournament is probably the most female-friendly chess tournament in the world. This year they had Womens Prizes of £15K, £10K, £5K all the way down to 12th £500. This is incredibly generous and no...

Repudiation/Moratorium

<t>It's unclear what you're asking. If you're talking about CDS's then there is a buyer and seller of protection. If the reference entity repudiates its debt ("these bonds were issued by the false government before the Revolution and are nothing to with us") or declares a moratorium ("we'll pay one d...

Choosing the right MQF

Exeter for many reasons ... clean air ... sloaney girls who like horses ... plenty of weekend chess tournaments in Bristol.

Advice about getting into quant-style roles

<t>The best way is to do a Masters in Finance at a good school ...Of course I appreciate that may be very difficult. It's not that you acquire information you couldn't otherwise get, it's more that you now look like the sort of person they should be hiring and you can demonstrate your interest in fi...

Advice about getting into quant-style roles

<t>I doubt you'll like my answer ... but you're not a strong candidate at all.The days are long gone when anyone who understood how to solve a PDE numerically and could knock out some code was getting hired as a quant. Chicago, Columbia, Sloan, Wharton etc etc are churning out Masters in Finance in ...

Should i make a call?

Never waste any time or nervous energy waiting for potential jobs. Just pretend you didn't get it and carry on looking.

White Paper/ Case study help needed

So you want someone to write a white paper for free which proves the value of your research? That would surely be immensely valuable to you? Why wouldn't you be willing to pay for it?

London figures look OK. Did you spot the currency change to £?
