Re: Trump -- the last 100 days

The bleeding orifice that occupies the White House is losing more fights than he is winning these days. Hopefully, that is a sign of things to come. We are still awaiting the traditional punishment for treason. I am by no means an expert on US politics but it seems a mistake to emotionally invest t...

Re: Are You Ready for Some Rugby?

I don't know much about this game, which is probably why I saw some similarity between a fargment of a rugby match I watched some time ago and today's Parliament sitting.

Re: Stupid question of the day

What's the difference between DPhil and PhD? I'm being told that DPhil is something between MSc and PhD.
DPhil and PhD are both doctorates and are equivalent. Some unversities abbreviate the degree name differently.

Re: Would it be a tragedy if humans went extinct?

I knew one professor (he collaborated with Feynman on some occasion) who was a big fan of Dolly Parton. Otherwise a normal guy, but he kept talking about her every day. I personally don't understand what's to like about her. Only Americans and Irish appreciate Country Music. It never caught on on t...

Re: Would it be a tragedy if humans went extinct?

Would Human Extinction Be a Tragedy? " Our species possesses inherent value, but we are devastating the earth and causing unimaginable animal suffering." It has been said that "four legs good, two legs bad" but I reckon it is probably a about time to hand over the alpha species baton to the cephalo...

Re: All about Cats

are you sure position #2 isn't showing deference to the alpha cat?
My cats favourite positions:

and "rub me on the belly and I'll scratch and bite you to blood in return"

Re: All about Cats

My cats are an endless disappointment to me. Instead of being imposing beasts, they are rarely  rampant or salient.  They do a bit of Sejant erect when fighting each other but spend most of their time as c ouchant or dormant. And the boy cat spends a lot of time p ascuant. https://i.pinimg.com/origi...

Re: Are You Ready for Some Rugby?

I have a sneaking suspicion that the CTE/concussion risk for successful players is going to lead to their being a lot more self selective
about the number of games played.

If that is the beginning of the end, I wonder if this is the end of the end:  Guinness zero
(I had no idea this existed).

I'm travelling to a country which isn't particularly rawtarian-friendly. Do you think they will let me through the airport security check with two cauliflowers and 2 pounds of carrots in my bag?
Which country doesn't sell vegetables?

Re: Option on a portfolio

I have looked for, but cannot find, an option where you take all the losses on a portfolio of assets below a certain %. I.e. specify the assets to which the option applies, the notional amount held in each, and the starting price for each. Then agree to take all losses where the fall at expiry exce...

Re: Brexit - the last 50 days

I was merely responding to a question from the lovely Catastrophe. Back to Brits!   I watched part of Lawrence of Arabia in a luxe bar a few night ago. A model for Brexit. “The Oxonians do not carry water.” No, the model for Brexit is this scene from L of A: TvQViPBAvPk Choosing scenes from a biopi...

Re: Brexit - the last 50 days

Here is a child’s nursery rhyme for you: There was a little girl Who had a little curl Right in the middle of her forehead When she was good, She was very, very good And when she was bad She was horrid. :D My hair is straight (no curls) but the rest applies completely. Noted that your hair is quite...
