Great Brainteaser

Thanks Chukchi... interesting article!I also don't need Weil to get the answer for powers of 2...what is remarkable is that we have the same answer for powers of any other number (except powers of 10).

Great Brainteaser

I was told that this problem was suggested by V. I. Arnold. Simple question: What is the probability that a given power of two starts with a digit 1? (e.g. 2^4=16, 2^7=128, 2^10=1024, ...).

<t>Hey guys!Just had a phone interview and was asked to solve the "dice problem" this thread is about....Here is my solution using conditional expectation: where X is a dice outcome and E[X1] = 3.5. The reasoning is the following: if the first outcome is less than the price of n-1 - step game, then ...

"100kg of Berries" Brainteaser

you might be right, but this problem is about math......not about plant biology. The point here is that intuitively, at the first glance, the answer seems absurd (at least for me).

"100kg of Berries" Brainteaser

<t>Hello, smart people...Here is a funny brainteaser. The point is to solve it in you head, without using pen and paper...it's for high school children. You have 100kg of berries (blueberry, raspberry, whatever..). 99% of berries is water. ............................some time passed and some amount ...

Headhunter's question.

Jump-diffusion model estimation

<t>By the way....why not model jumps in this case like this where Y is now some distribution which may take positive and negative values but skewed to the right (since positive jumps are larger than negative). We could use Generalized Lambda Distribution and adjust parameters so it fits the data... ...

Jump-diffusion model estimation

<t>Sorry, I didn't notice your answer. Thanks a lot! However, I dont know why you call it -approx- MLE....as I understand in case when we have at most one jump per day (considering daily data) we can use ordinary MLE. The problem with MLE for continuous tim models is that we may have infinite number ...
