Berkeley Interview

I have an interview with Berkeley regarding my application to MFE. Does anyone who has been through the process have any suggestions on what to expect? Is any part of it something that I can prepare for? Thanks

Physics or Finance?

<t>As a person who backed out of a physics Ph.D. Here are my $.02.If you truly love physics do it. As a physics Ph.D. student you would be able to prepare yourself to be a quant. I don't think the reverse is true. In addition to you grad courses in physics, you could take all the fun classes they re...

Option value independent of asset's drift rate?

<t>Fulvio, not to beat the horse to death, but another suggestion. There are some really nice arguments explaining arbitrage pricing in Baxter and Rennie chapter II. It seems to me that your Gaussian model might a bit of overkill if I understand you correctly. The whole idea seems to be that arbitrag...

Sign convention in portfolios for arbitrage arguments

<t>Sorry, if this has been posted, but I couldn't find a similar topic in any of the archives.Extremely basic question about sign convention in portfolios. When you sell something it seems to get a negative sign. When you buy something it gets a positive sign. I don't understand this sign convention. ...

Masters in physics, applying to grad school, how to get initial experience?

<t>Hey guys, After doing some more homework I am applying to graduate programs. Berkeley (MFE- almost done with my application), Stanford, Rutgers, and Baruch. For admittance in Spring or Fall 2005. (I have the application due dates, program names, etc. written down in my planner. It won't start bei...

PDE book

<t>Checked the forum and didnt see this book anywhere. Got a neat little Dover book called "Partial Differential Equations for Scientists and Engineers." by Stanley J. Farlow. Does nice coverage of all types of linear P.D.E's (parabolic, hyperbolic, elliptic) does some stuff on numerical methods. I ...

Best attributes for a prof to have?

<t>1. If its a professor you are doing a thesis with, I think most important attribute the professor can have is strong interest in making sure that you stay on track with your thesis and that you graduate in a timely fashion. 2. If it's for a class, I think you need someone who is willing to take y...

Getting hired with only a masters

<t>Well, many of the jobs do specify a masters as a requirement rather than a Ph.D. I would imagine however, that they might wind up hiring Ph.D's anyway. I was planning on taking a couple of the actuary exams as well just to get real credentials. I think that a lot of times knowing people helps too...

Getting hired with only a masters

<t>I am almost afraid to ask this one... For those of you (if any.) with non-financial MASTERS degrees and relatively little experience, what did you have to do get hired as a quant? Did any of you manage to do it without a Ph.D? What did you do to sell yourself over others with more credentials? Fo...

The need for mathematical rigour

<t>Guys,Thank you so much for the insight. I am seeing enough variation in the answers here, that I really feel like the best thing to do is for me to jump into the things in the way I feel most comfortable with. It seems like everyone here, had their particular approach to learning. I really apprec...

<r>Hello all,New to the forum, and trying to make my way from physics to finance, as many others have before...I have seen this issue addressed in other threads, but I still had questions regarding the mathematical backgrounds of practicioners of quanitative finance.
