Re: Philosophy of Mathematics

Newton and Euler were the same person??
The acorn doesn’t fall from the tree.
But Lagrange is closer.

Re: Philosophy of Mathematics

We've all learned (discrete) Newton's method in kindergarten

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newton%27s_method

It is an iterative method and the nasty surprise is that it is the Euler method!

I suppose that the old-timers didn't have recourse to ODE solvers? Same with Cauchy's gradient descent.

I suspect his "Goodbye" will be followed by "And another thing..."
I don't think that word means what he thinks it means.
he's a bit like Colombo minus the humour.

Re: Asymptotic behaviour of ODE/PDE (large time)

The more I investigate Gradient Descent (GD) the more I believe ML have opened a can of worms (in their naivety). Invoking Sapir-Whorf, life begins with linear algebra and iterative, i.e. they are looking at the solution. Because algebra is low-hanging fruit. Let's skip the zillion fixes and patches...

Fantastic story! United we stand, divided we fall: https://fablesofaesop.com/the-four-oxen-and-the-lion.html Cute. They weren't Irish oxen. Funny, but I was in Soweto and Stanton, Jo'burg 16 June 2006, the 30th anniversary of the murder of Hector Pieterson in 1976 and the start of the Soweto riots....

Re: Models for Covid-19

I told MPs how, literally as I was sketching the whiteboard above in the PM’s study on 13 March in preparation for the meeting I planned the next day with the PM, the deputy Cabinet Secretary walked in and told us that DHSC clearly had no serious plan and was imploding. When asked last week by MPs r...

Re: No new C++ until 2010, no concepts

Concepts and this (?) A final remark on the relative merits of producing analytical solutions versus defining a finite difference framework that subsumes and supports a range of pdes sharing similar structure and functionality: in the former case each new specific option type will need its own speci...
