Quant finance is 3-5 years

when someone writes papers being MSc or PhD student - he ALWAYS has a supervisor who actually tells him what to do. The point of having PhD and doing science is to supervise yourself. It is really stuped to think that MSc or PhD student can actually do scence alone.

Quant now or after postdoc?

<t>Have been there. It is much better now for juniors then for example 1-2 years ago but still a lot of things should come out together for you to secure a job. I would recommend to take a postdoc offer but try to shift the starting date for a couple of months and continue looking for a job. Postdoc...

Doing research as a front office quant

<t>QuoteOriginally posted by: CosteanuIn my case I would say roughly zero. My boss once told me that one thing I did would qualify as an MPU. MPU, for those in the know, means minimum publishing unit. I tend to think it's about 0.5 MPU's.I did some research on my own time though. I think as a FO qua...

Market risk management

<t>There is a big difference between market risk quants and market risk managers! The last ones (that is what the original post is about as I assume) dont do any models and dont test/check them at all - that is the job of model validation guys. The market risk quants do the models for market risk ma...

Market risk management

DevonFangs, could you explain what particular "stupid" you found in my comment? I described the job as it is with no intention to disregard it at all.

Market risk management

typical back-office job. You'll be most likely sitting somewhere far-far away from trading floor talking to traders on the phone at best. All the quant stuff is most likely be restricted to using already developed market risk tools (xls spreadsheets)

Confused engineer standing on a cross road with heavy fog need light

Try consultancy companies first (McKinsey etc), if it does not work out try to persuade your boss to sponsor your MBA. Otherwise the common way to change career is to enroll on MBA/PhD depending on what sort of finance you have in mind.

Theoretical Physics Ph.D. looking to get into the Quant business

<t>Quote I should point out that the reason people hire physics Ph.D.'s is that they can learn math quickly. For example, most of oil and gas involves algebra, so you can give a book on petroleum exploration to someone with a physics Ph.D. and within two weeks they can know enough to be able to be u...
