Being a quant - is it a right choice for a quantitative modeler?

Being a quant - is it a right choice for a quantitative modeler?

<t>I would be curious as to the reasons why statisticians/statistical modelers always seem to want to be pure quants.--Because they like it per se (otherwise, why bother to get a PhD in Statistics?) and feel the most confident and secure in a position where quant modeling skills add value to the com...

<t>Quantie:Could you answer one question for me. How did it slip your attention during the interview process that the GS desk strategist position is "glorified IT"?I am asking because I once listened to a GS representative talk and he said a candidate may have to speak to as many as 30 people in the...

Being a quant - is it a right choice for a quantitative modeler?

<t>I am quite curious about this - would you say the reason are purist and intellectual or would you say it's prudent to move?--It's both purist and prudent. To elaborate on the latter, if I believe my strengths are in the area of quant modeling, then my job security will be highest in a position wh...

Being a quant - is it a right choice for a quantitative modeler?

<t>Update: currently I work as a statistician/software developer outside of financial sector. My job does involve quant modeling, but not as much as I originally intended, so I am thinking about moving on. I realized that the main problem about getting a "real" quant modeling position is that they a...

Just finish a C++ programming test on teckchek-online

<t>I myself got a high score on Brainbench C++ and I strongly believe that such tests are only appropriate for entry-level developers, who have no real C++ projects to show. All what was said above about focusing on arcane syntax is true for Brainbench as well.I am not sure why your potential employ...

Question about buy-and-hold strategy

<t>Hello:There is this trading strategy where one is allowed to hold a position of variable size and direction, e.g. 5 shares long, then 10 shares short, etc.Is there a comparable buy-and-hold strategy that could be used as a benchmark? The problem is how many shares one should hold. Thanks in advanc...

method of moments estimation

<t>I did a very similar project once, so I think I know why you try to avoid MLE. GMM is much simpler to implement, but it failed in my case because of high correlation of sample moments used in GMM. I guess it's common occurence - if it were otherwise, nobody would bother with more burdensome MLE, ...

Being a quant - is it a right choice for a quantitative modeler?

<t>Nikkei, have you ever considered doing quantitative models in economics, other than finance?+++++How is it different? Economics has the same problem: the processes of interest are not physical, so they are not that amenable to quantitative analysis. In my job search, I used some job resources cre...

Being a quant - is it a right choice for a quantitative modeler?

I'm not sure why start-ups are recommended per se. It's not like start-ups are associated with quantitative modeling more than older companies. So far, the only usable advice I heard here was to look at engineering jobs, which I am going to follow, thanks.

Being a quant - is it a right choice for a quantitative modeler?

<t>What I am trying to say is that it gets harder and harder to do what *you* like as the money goes up: it is more about what is good for the business.+++++++++There's a flaw in your reasoning. What you say is: if things A, B, C are good for the business, then there's no such person who would just ...
