Thesis with a bank

Even if you can do it, I think it's a bad idea. You almost certainly won't get proper supervision, which will make it much harder for you to do good work. Maybe you could look into doing a separate internship instead.

Once again about quants WORKING HOURS

Of course people can sleep for only 4-6 hours per working day. In particular, most new parents probably get less sleep than that.

Desk Quant job hunting in NYC as a tourist - a disadvantage?

I'm not sure it's legal to look for a job on a tourist visa. Also, some employers simply won't want the hassle of applying for an H1-B. How long will it take to process your citizenship application?

Can quants work 35h/week and be successful?

Model validation quants seem to work shorter hours. Otherwise, yes, it's unavoidable.

Central Bank as a first job

I meet lots of people who used to work in central banks. They very often end up as economic strategists on the sell side, or fixed income portfolio managers on the buy side. I personally think it's a great background to have.

I'm in California, what now? (especially from those working there)

There's a recruiter named Deborah Kolb (818-999-9891) based in the Los Angeles area. I've worked with her twice: once looking for a job, once filling a position.

Cambridge Tripos, part 3

Keynes was twelfth Wrangler, but I don't think he did Part III; he went to Marshall's lectures instead.

more questions about model val. and getting jobs

It was absurd. I didn't do it for very long - only a couple of years, less really. And looking back on it, I wasn't working that efficiently; I just spent a lot of time at work. Nowadays I work much less, and get more done. But that's not the culture of an investment bank.

more questions about model val. and getting jobs

<t>An old colleague of mine worked as a model validation quant at Deutsche. I can't answer all your questions, but:1) For her, 50 hours is a busy week. When I was in the front office, 80 hours was typical.2) I have no idea, but see the last page of this guide.3) Apply for any job which would let you...

Do you know any quants going back to academia?

I don't think that's true. Both kinds of job are pretty hard to find.

Do you know any quants going back to academia?

<t>A friend of mine worked as a quant at Macquarie Bank, then did a PhD in number theory, went on to a postdoc in Heidelberg, then went back to investment banking, and ended up as head of trading at a convertible arbitrage hedge fund. (And perhaps he has yet another job by now...) But that's not rea...

I'd take the Ph.D. in Pure Mathematics any day. Just a personal preference.
