I saw many different ranks of people working in hedge fund companies, e.g. MD, COO, CIO, Chief Risk Officer, Partner, ED, VP, etc. How can I know if a guy is genuinely at senior rank? Is VP comparable VP in ibanks?

I guess that you are talking about algo/quant trading. As far as I know, risk management and quant trading still remain hot in this bad job market. Talk to headhunters and you will realize that you are in fact sought after by many firms. Good luck!
