Makes sense to start a quant career at 35?

<r>Quoteseveral members of the research group at IBM working on the problems I mentioned above have recently been lured away to work for a CT based billionaire's hedge fund. Most of them are smart, seasoned AI and text analysis researchers who were working on cancer genomics, among other important p...

Makes sense to start a quant career at 35?

If I was in your shoes I would try to calibrate what longevity means in finance since that seems to be a major subtext in your posts. IMO, 10 years is a looooooong time in professional finance. Like dog years. What that means compared to other professions I have no idea.

Is model validation really that bad?

<t>QuoteOriginally posted by: barnyIt seems like for someone with a PhD in Physics but without an MFE and much experience in quantitative finance that model validation would be the perfect place to start. Why is everyone so negative towards it?What are your broad longer term goals coming to finance?...

Salary expectation vs. actual offer

Switcheroo

<t>ah, thats awkward. So Mr Jones is the lynch pin here. Based on your profile I would surmise this is a reasonably senior-ish hire. In my opinion, the move is not contacting smith directly but somehow getting jones to facilitate. I say this because I imagine a senior level company man hiring for a ...

Switcheroo

<t>The question is, how do I do the "switcheroo" and make it clear to Smith that I would like to work for him and not Jones? All the while being diplomatic and not offending Jones?Should I contact Smith directly?Sheesh how do I get myself into these things?*******************************************...

Starting compensation for a developer

<t>I certainly have my doubts about that wharton piece. Though I have no idea what academia pays I have never personally seen an offer of 300 to 500 cash salary for a greenhorn phd at any of the funds I've been at, unless it was for some expert at some highly specialized in-demand thing in which cas...

Changing paths for a mid-career trader

<t>Maybe I don't understand what "structured business of a large investment bank" entails and the following rant hinges on that, but I can't see what's so special about a clean plate and joining as a junior researcher? If I'm reading your professional experience correctly then I fail to see why you w...

Global Macro Framework

Benchmark equity/bond momentum bursts through fx carry is a fairly well known phenomenon. Might also want to add gold and oil in there. And it's as "forecastable" as any financial time series.

Salomon two factor

<t>Thanks guys. Will have to take a look at Tuckman's book, not very familiar with it. The idea that they pinned a parameter directly to the Fed rate is interesting to me. I suppose in hindsight we now know two factor short rate models do not generate enough correlations, but its interesting to me h...

Boutique CLO fund, quant analyst position, £70K in 2 years, is he bluffing?

I would suggest taking it too. But more from a 'bird in hand' kind of perspective. Your CLO job can then fund your algo job search!! Frankly I think two years in CLO world is not what I would call a "less riskier path", but then my personal bearishness colors my opinion here.

Maximizing compensation

<t>The days where you could jump to any ol' hedge fund and get an auto pay raise are sadly quite over.In fact, I surmise that many of the brand name hf's pay junior level people quite 'conservatively', mainly for the fact that they know that they are brand name. Of course, if one is a superstar then...

<t>A question on rate modeling history;Bookstaber in 'demon of our design' talks of salomon brothers fixed arb desk using a two factor rate model. He also mention it was adjusted for fed rate decisions. Was this just a two factor hull white with r(0) fixed at the fed rate? If not, any published detai...
