Current quant job market for pure mathematicians by training

<t>I am in a similar position to curiousgeorge. I have just finished a PhD in so called pure mathematics. I have done just enough programming to know that I enjoy it and could probably become quite good at it. However to date my time has been spent on other things.I am interested in finance and econ...

What are Banach spaces and why are they useful in quant finance?

<t>The abstraction of a Banach space came about when peoples' point of view shifted from studying individual functions to studying whole classes of functions. With this approach a function can be considered as a point in some space of functions and the methods of geometry can then be allied.Hilbert ...

The CQF is one of the most respected and practical quantitative finance programs in the world

I am sold. I think the QCF is without doubt the best thing in the world. Now who will pay for me to do it?

Help me decide - postdoc at business school or look for quant jobs?

<t>Coming back to the original post. I am in a similar position. I am coming to the end of my maths PhD. The options seem to be1. continue as I had always intended to and try to get a quant job. (This might be hard in the current climate as I have little practical skills.)2. Try to get a 1 year post...

Ruin probability

<t>I assume that the gambler is bust if he has negative or zero units. He must also stop playing if his fortune reaches N units (say). Otherwise he goes bust with probability 1. In which case let p_k be the probability he goes bust starting from k units. Then p_k satisfies p_k = pp_{k+x} + (1-p)p_{k...

synthetic vs analytic thinking?

How do you define analytic ability? (good at epsilon-delta arguments:-)?) In order to make progress in any science you have to be creative. In that way science becomes an art. To be good at anything first learn the stuff and then (hopefully) have some good ideas.

Too old for finance?

<t>Cheers guys, this discussion has been great for me. The conclusion is to forget about age or any other factor and decide what I would most enjoy. And the answer (with only minor regrets) I think is to leave academia. By the way, the sort of maths I've been doing is Banach algebras (the more algeb...

Too old for finance?

<t>Hello all,I'd like your opinion on the following. I am coming to the end of my PhD in maths and I am keen for a career in finance. However it looks like I have the possibility of getting a 3 year post doc position to do some more pure maths work. I would like eventually to work in finance but I a...
