why is quant job better than engineer job?

I'm a chemical engineer who has considered a quant career primarily because most chemical engineering jobs are places where I don't want to work. I want to live and work in a city.

Quantitative Climate Change

<t>I believe that climate modeling is science. The model is a sum of many different sub-models, many of which are well-defined. Like the fluid dynamics which describes the oceans and the atmosphere. The solubility of C02 and carbonates in the ocean. The reflectivity of various surfaces like water, i...

Chinese taking over quant roles and places at school

<t>I think science and mathematics are viewed differently in China and India. Scientists and engineers are very respected. In the US right now, lawyers and doctors and politicians are more respected professions - just turn on the TV and you will find dozens of dramas and sitcoms about these professi...

Quantitative Climate Change

You're right, it's hopeless. Let's stop science because it never works.

Quantitative Climate Change

My best friend in grad school did climate simulations, and I was a chemical engineer doing CFD and reaction engineering, and we were surprised to find out that our work was so similar. The earth is like an enormous three-phase chemical reactor. All neat stuff.

Job market for quants in Philadelphia vs. New York

<t>QuoteOriginally posted by: resident76Obviously NYC and Chicago will be hotspots for some time, but Philly does have the 3rd largest option exchange, so I'd expect there are still some opportunities floating there. I'm in the same boat as you, I am strongly drawn to Philly (coming from North Carol...

Job market for quants in Philadelphia vs. New York

<t>Obviously Philadelphia is a much smaller city with a smaller job market, but do you think there are enough job options in Philadelphia to sustain a good career? I really love the city but am worried about moving there if it would be career suicide. Seems to me that on one hand, it could be an adv...

Anyone program in APL?

<t>I've grown to love this language. Very powerful for manipulating matrices. The ability to nest variables (a matrix or a vector or a character string can be an element in a matrix) is also very powerful. I use the APL package from Dyalog which has some nice GUI abilities as well. Does anyone else ...

Levenberg-Marquardt in matlab

<t>Before you try that routine, I would suggest using one of the built-in nonlinear optimizers in MATLAB. Basically just write a .m file that accepts lambda as an argument and returns your objective function. And pass the name of that function and an initial guess for lambda to the optimizer. If tha...

motivation to keep paying dividends

The company may not like any of their other choices for spending their profits at that particular time. Some of these other choices might be capital investments (for example building a new factory) or spending on research and development.

Why is Levenberg Marquardt so popular?

<t>My guess: the algorithm has been around for a while, so it has a large reputation. And it works. In my experience, no optimization method is perfect, and instead of trying many different new and fancy algorithms, one's time is usually better spent on posing the problem in different ways and being...
