Peter Carr has died

Peter Carr a giant in our profession has passed away.
A great teacher, kind and with huge enthusiasm for his subject.

Re: Cities/countries with best value for startup firm looking to hire quants?

Wroclaw, UBS hires a lot there and pays badl, so you can pay a bit more than Wroclaw rates but less than somewhere good. The problem of course is that they won't stay long.

Re: Transportation problems reducing income in an LBO target

I suspect the issue is latency. If you only start shipping the stuff when you have an order then you must wait, so you need to store more neaer your customers. Ther is an optimisation issue in terms of cost, price and time which would take effort, but is not every hard.

Re: Homage to Catalonia

It is not Germany 1933, because Madrid did not use enough violence against the Catalans. A few rubber bullets, head kicks and sticks do not deter any opposition that is worth deterring. They do sway the people in the middle who see fascist-era national police attacking voting centres. Personally I d...

Monty Hall is dead, RIP

One does wonder if as I type this, St. Peter is presenting Mr. Hall with a set of pearly gates to choose between.

Re: should people be allowed to self-identify?

As a scientist I am only convinced by observables. I am rarely in a position to examine the genetalia or chromosomes of other people. Thus the only viable data is from the invidvidual concerned, so I see no alternative to accept whatever "identity" they want. As an Englishman I of course lo...

Re: Wealth tax

he UK has a form of "wealth tax" because property taxes are a bizarre function of what the house has been worth. Like in the US, rich celebrities are nearly all left wing, but when Labour suggested a "mansion tax", ie putting up property taxes on the largest homes, they threw suc...

Re: Possible problem with Quant Dev consultancy business model

The number of possiblities for what is going on is large,  so I'm only going to sample. Firstly, I'd ask why they hired someone in ? If they were happy with what the quants were doing, why spend the money ? Is that they aren't delivering, are too expensive or the volume of work has gone up ? It some...

Re: Estimate the length of time to complete a project

Timescales are important, but also the schedule and expectations you set... I've long advocated  "Continuous Visible Productivity", in other words structuring your work so that management regularly get to see progress. Big deep dives where nothing seems to happen are bad for your survival ...

Re: Asked to login at desk of colleague

I would counsel you to read my article about the downfall of Jerome Kerviel especially the bits about sharing passwords and being left out to dry if it goes completely tits up. My article was 9 years ago and from the 17.2 million hits it got, some people claimed my analysis was wrong and this stuff ...

Re: Chinese Maths books to be translated into English

Traden4alpha, you're assuming the next 30 years are radically different from the last 30, which is a big bet to place for a country with 63 million people. I happen to agree, but a harder question is what to do with the poeple in the middle ?

Re: Chinese Maths books to be translated into English

There is an interesting mean/variance problem here... Chinese and German education is optimised to produce a good average, but that seems to have been at the expense of producing the most outstanding people in a broad sweep of science and arts. Thus we have the situation where individual Cambridge c...

Re: minimum wage vs maximum wage

I'm old enough to remmeber when  there were maximum salaries, so is Jeremy Corbyn, which means he has no excuse. Up until the mid 1980s very few CEO or big noises in firms got anything like the pay we see. They however got: Chauffeur Driven Cars A really large % of the workforce got company cars, mo...
