Re: "don't do riddles"

This is a circlejerk thread but I feel tempted to contribute. Firstly Hansson knows bubble sort. He is just exaggerating. He has probably forgotten QuickSort which is most programmers right after the interviews.  A typical IT role is very very different from a Quant role. IT roles require breadth wh...

Interviews have no sense

<t>Brainteasers are not very useful in my opinion. They provide a very skewed and inaccurate view. Either the candidate is really good a solving them our of practice and recognize patterns and they come off as brilliant when they are not or the candidate has no experience in solving them and come of...

expected salary based on contract rate

The total compensation is anywhere from 130-135K. 110K is too low for a base as you need to be reasonably confident that 20-25K bonus is average. If you are in IT I am not sure it is average if you are in the initial phase of your career. A safe figure is somewhere around 120-125K base

If you are in the USA - the approximate salary assuming benefits like 401K, Medical, Vacation comes to be about 130K-135K total compensation.

Career move for $ vs interest

<t>QuoteI am NOT rationalizing hazing. It's a matter of degree and hazing would be a 10 on my scale. In that case what happens at level 4-5. Things like staying late regularly, working sometimes on the weekend is something all high earners should expect. No one ever got rich working 40 hours a week. ...

What is the best way to recover from this technical interview?

<t>If he wanted to reject you over the silly error, he would have rejected you already. He came back so there is some inclination to hire you but he wants to see how you fix it. Maybe he is anal or maybe he is following HR procedures like - Reject a candidate unless they get all right. Of-course, it...

Getting a job with a MS in CS

<t>QuoteI would say programming skills are already as universal as speaking English. I wouldn't choose studying English unless I loved it for some reason - I needed it for studies and work so I've learnt it myself. This! You put it well. I don't get the universal hatred for programming. It is only a ...

Getting a job with a MS in CS

<t>QuoteHm it sounds like at least a basic level of computer science is necessary. Guess I'll try to finish up a few core courses in the MSCS before attempting to switch to MS Math. Without good programming and IT skills you will not be able to become a quant on Wall Street (most of the time anyways...

Getting a job with a MS in CS

<t>QuoteIf the rest of computer science is only about algorithms and data structures, I definitely want to switch over math. But wondering if IBs and HFs would hire someone with a MS in Math?Anything is possible but you do need programming skills for any quantitative career. Or else you will be look...
