Trading Firms

<t>The essential difference between prop trading and asset management is that some quant strategies do really well but don't scale and others don't do closely that well but scale much better. People that have the second type of strategies usually sell them to clients and go the asset management rout...

Trading Firms

<t>Jump does mostly HFT. People in HFT are usually paid based on results. If you don't produce PNL, sooner or later you are out. It used to take very little capital to do HFT. Now with all that technology and idea competition between shops it requires more but not a tremendous amount. Jump has been ...

Trading Firms

Jump is a prop trading company, they have no clients and trade for their own account. They are very successful but have been keeping low profile. I believe Engineer's Gate has some investors and they want to go the hedge fund road. Not sure about Quantlab.

Lose my trading job -> Start a company?

<t>You don't do algos, just click-trade, right? If so, what seems to be the problem? Even if you make 4 mio a year click-trading and your Sharpe is decent and you don't require a lot of capital, there will be some prop shops that can pay you back up to 50% of that and some even more. Send me a priva...

Bank or HFT prop shop?

<t>You should take HFT prop any time, even if it is a niche dying company. Your upside potential is much higher, you can actually learn something about quant trading and you will be a lot more marketable on the buy side with this experience. There are way too many bank quants and most of them are no...

Low latency ... Que?

<t>Low latency means that there is a critical path that has to execute really fast. It does not mean that each and every part of your system has to be blazing fast. For example, you can read your system configuration at startup from XML using boost and still have a high performance HFT system.Templa...

Currently in Ph.D. - Questions

Are you interested in HFT? We do decent amount of machine learning. In any case, skip MFE as you do not need it (reading books on the topic is still useful though). If your credentials are strong, you can apply directly to quant funds or I can find a good recruiter who can work with you.

HFT Salaries - Recruiter inflation or reality?

<t>All of these are true.- HFT dev/quant jobs are closer to the money and many HFT shops do not have designated trader positions; small teams of quants and devs write trading code together and therefore are directly responsible for PNL. In such situations, compensation is often linear in PNL (depend...

non-competes in Quant hedge funds

Yes, non-competes are common. Usual duration is half a year or a year; shorter non-competes are useless, longer non-competes are very hard to enforce.

Prospects of a high frequency FX trader

Non-competes are usual in this business but 4 years are too much. IMHO, no company will be able to enforce this in court, but it may give you trouble anyway. What company is that?

Prospects of a high frequency FX trader

Go for it if you love coding and statistics. Stay in sales otherwise. Also high-frequency is a very competitive area and it is getting more so. Many BBs cannot compete due to weak technology. Sales would be a more natural career track in a big bank.
