Phone Interview Advice

<t>Suppose you can knock out brain teasers with out a problem in a reasonable amount of time when you are sitting alone. Then you get on a phone interview, you start with the first brain teaser question, and its something you know you can answer easily but its not a simple one liner. But, like most ...

infinite volatility

At infinite volatility, the price of a put is assumed to be K for all S. At T we set the put value = max[K-S,0], which holds at infinity as well. I understand that infinity can not be thought of as an actual point, but intuitively wouldn't this create a discontinuity from T-dt to T?

infinite volatility

<t>I have been doing some thinking about infinite volatility in options models and maybe there is someone out there who can clear my though process for me. Suppose the value of the option depends on time, the underlying, and volatility of the underlying. Option values increase in volatility, but at ...

Stochastic Calculus: Shreve or Steele?

Definitely don't need a fully rigorous proof for every single theorem when I am reading, but proofs for the key ones are important to me. Do either of these books emphasize intuition?

Stochastic Calculus: Shreve or Steele?

<t>I am deciding whether to purchase Steele's Stochastic Calculus and Financial Applications or Shreve's Stochastic Calculus for Finance II: Continuous-Time Models. Which would you recommend? I am looking for something that is readable for self-study but does not do much waving of the hand. I'm look...

What exactly is a "Job market paper" (for post-doctoral positions)

<t>In academia, it's a paper that no one reads. They will read your abstract, and if they are venturous, they will read a little of your introduction. After that, they may go to your conclusion. What matters are those more senior PhDs who are writing recommendations on your behalf based on what they...

questions about doing a PhD in finance

<t>QuoteOriginally posted by: bigbangThis is in line with my observation, which runs counter to yours, that anyone who got into a finance PhD could have easily gotten into a comparable economics PhD ('comparable' in your favorite metric).I would disagree to some extent, based on some observations. A...

questions about doing a PhD in finance

<t>Finance PhD is for all intensive purposes is equivalent to Econ Phd with a field in Finance (but that similarity stops at coursework). You don't need as much maths to get into a Finance PhD program, but for top Econ PhD programs you need to have at least a bachelors in math. In analgoy form: Fina...

questions about doing a PhD in finance

<t>PhD Finance > PhD Statistics on a 100 different levels. You also shouldn't be surprised you got accepted if you have a great academic background... the applicant pool to PhD finance programs is huge and has a ton of extremely non-qualified applicants due to its allure (so that <5% acceptance rate...

At a disadvantage?

<t>As for a little background... I went through a very thorough final round of interviewing at a large firm in NYC, and I was told I did really well. Was even told by the first interviewer that I am a "perfect candidate". I was working with a top recruiter. A few days later I found out they offered ...

Graduate or Wait?

<t>Yeah, I really don't want to be here (or in school) any longer... I am 26 and really want this chapter in my life finished so I can start living. Luckily I can always have my degree issued in May, August, or January of any year. EscapeArtist999's comments about hiring managers holding it against ...

Graduate or Wait?

Well, the OPT doesn't apply to me... I am a US citizen. I will have to talk to my advisers on this, according to department rumors, they tend to make it difficult for you to graduate (pass your defense) with out a job placement in hand.

Graduate or Wait?

<t>I was wondering, if it so happens that I can not find employment by May, should I just defend my PhD thesis and get that PhD in hand. I think that a lot of potential employers are looking at my resume and saying... we don't feel like waiting N months for this guy. Has anyone else been in this sit...

What use is PhD?

<t>Let's be honest... not going into academia does not equal a failed PhD. Most people do a PhD are people who are looking to challenge themselves and hopefully come up with something novel with their research. They believe they are smart enough to do it and they also do it for personal validation a...
