Quick Job Offer

Funny thing is you can often get more when you don't offer any money vs. offering such a pitiful sum.

What coursework for a career in Market Risk

That's what I thought- but then how come I've seen Citi and Barclays both hire undergrad students as market risk analysts - both engineering majors that I'm sure don't have stochastic calculus training and probably only basic differential equation training.

A Simple Question

You guys beat me to it. I would guess that the average decreases in "fail" days are bigger than the average increases in "hit days since nearly every economic paper on bubbles talks about the phenomenon of bubbles rising slowly and bursting rapidly.

Is it common for an experienced hire to be asked for his GPA

<t>Is it because I look suspicious to them? I have bachelors/masters degrees from an ivy league school and took a job with a risk consulting firm after- do they suspect that my gpa is crap and that's why I didn't work for a BB? (In reality it was just average for engineering- meaning not crap but no...

Freight Derivatives

<t>Are you trying to make a specific custom swap and be the broker between two clients? The underlying value of most freight derivs are based on the Shanghai contarized freight index (SCFI) but there are others. The index publishes sub-indexes for different freight routes (so you can make a more spe...

The world has changed

<t>
Technology also means more automation and lesser number of highly specialized job.
You you mean more highly specialized jobs, right? I would expect technology would make it more possible for work to be dolled out more efficiently in a cost/expertise basis around the world. I think t...

market rallying after fed meeting??

<t>You posted this at the close on tuesday. The obvious (I think) reasons the market rallied that day after the fed announcement are 1) US Equities: fed commitment to keep yields super low for 2 years - that's a long time. and 2) US Gov 10yr: 2 yr commitment pushes people onto the end of the yield c...

EU - Who's next?

<t>wow. so how come Luxembourg's 10Y hovers around 3.2%? Just because the absolute value of debt is so small that nobody in the EU would mind bailing it out? If so, then what about the netherlands, whose 10Y is just a bit higher then lux?Could someone explain to me the main figures the markets look ...

Future Outlook of Real Estate Finance today (Securitization, Investment, etc)?

<t>Eventually the housing market will recover and people will once again want to take out a big mortgage to buy a home. (right?) In the future, how will this work? What will be different to avoid a repeat of '08? In terms of securitization, government guarantees, etc? e.g. will government guarantees...

Applying for a Applied Maths (Stats) PhD- need research exp?

<t>When applying to top US PhDs in applied math or stats, is research experience expected? Have most admitted applicants published something? My background is a BA joint major in Econ/Math and an MA in MathFin, both from top US schools. So I don't have crazy math classes (but I have what's needed for...

Basic Time Series Questions

<t>I have a very weak grasp of this stuff (save me from falling into the abyss!):1. what is the difference between a stationary process and a process with a stationary distribution? (wikipedia says they're not the same thing but doesn't explain)2. financial time series are usually non stationary, ri...

<t>unlike science, theories in economics are constantly changing as new developments in society occur. They're constantly being questioned, argued, refuted, modified, etc.so unless you are planning to become an academic economist, learning current economic theories is not a practical exercise. So my ...
