What usually happens when the person who hires you resigns?

With only two months at the firm, I wouldn't be optimistic about severance. My current firm's policy is no severance with less than six months, but since they aren't jerks they would probably give you a couple extra week's pay. Obviously, YMMV.

Engineering PhD switching to MBA Finance

All of that is true in my view, but it remains the case that the MBA solves political problems that the alternatives do not. The point of MBA programs is not to learn things that you otherwise couldn't learn.

Engineering PhD switching to MBA Finance

I don't think I've ever heard of anyone getting into a top MBA program (by which I assume we are referring to HBS/Wharton/CBS/Kellog/Booth/Haas/Stanford in the US) without professional experience. These programs are targeted to people with 2-3 years in a junior role.
