Re: The Sheltered Swiss

And then there was one. Of course, connoisseurs of the relevant literature know what comes next. “He went and hanged himself, and then there were none.”

Re: Why couldn't SVB repo out the treasuries?

Disregarding the noise in this thread, repo’ing held-to-maturity securities for the purpose of meeting a coordinated (thank you, Peter Thiel!) flood of deposit withdrawals is a rather temporary solution. I believe they went with FHLB advances instead, but that’s also a short term thing. Given the ma...

Re: Nouvelles de France

In the US, Labor Day is observed on the first Monday of September. I think mostly to separate it from the memory of the Chicago Haymarket Affair and the International socialist movement. And, of course, it’s roughly halfway between the two other major holidays: Independence Day and Thanksgiving!

Re: Trump -- the last 100 days

One of the landmark victories for the idiot was the rollback of bank regulations in 2018, after vigorous lobbying by the CEO of Silicon Valley Bank.

Re: norway

Alcohol is very expensive indeed. The guys from whom I'm renting the farm had their parents from Romania (accidentally the Danube Delta area neighbouring with my homeland bogs) living here for some time. There's a big culture of making/drinking light fruity wine there. The first thing they mentione...

Re: norway

Can you not imitate it indoors?
That goes to the “why” part. It’s old slang for throwing up, usually as the direct consequence of having imbibed too much. The polite approach is definitely to head out of doors, especially if you are in a cabin.

One day sounds a bit boastful, but he’s probably not totally wrong. With the US siding with Putin, Ukraine’s chances do not look so great.

Re: guess a country

While I think the writer has a good point that it would make sense to have a licensing system in place for clinical psychologists, “Sheffield State University” is pure and simple fraud. The writer could have saved himself hundreds of dollars by just making up his own credentials. I spent a little ti...

Re: sofr swap risk interview question

OK - I think you got it pretty much right. There is probably some slight inconsistency in your compounding (otherwise your initial swap value should be exactly zero), but you are correct that when not including the terminal notional amounts on each leg, then most of the value change does indeed come...

Re: sofr swap risk interview question

The correct way to answer the question (I occasionally ask some variation of this in interviews myself) is “what do you mean with ‘risk’?” That being said, we typically associate risk with short term price volatility (although usually in terms of contribution to the volatility of a portfolio of sort...

Da må du ikke rope på elgen!

I believe that expression arose with my generation. To those of you not steeped in this particular culture, just imagine the sound you would make if you went out of your cabin at night and imitated the mating call of a moose. And why!
