Quant Role Hiring frozen in all major financial institutions?

<t>I feel that not much/barely anything is going on in IBs/HFs, but I do feel that commodity/energy houses are hiring a little bit. I've recently been approached by headhunters for those types of positions and am going to explore one of these positions in further detail. Keeping my fingers crossed.H...

Any statistical course in London

<r>Check out UoL's short course listings. They also have some stats courses, but I doubt they teach R in those. <URL url="http://www.londoninternational.ac.uk/prospective_students/shortcourses/lse/units.shtmlIf"><LINK_TEXT text="http://www.londoninternational.ac.uk/pr ... ts.shtmlIf">http://www.lond...

Software Engineer entering Quant finance at age 37

It does seem like they're trying to re-invent the wheel.

Software Engineer entering Quant finance at age 37

<r>Oh yes, and there's another thing that ocurred to me on my way to the kitchen. I concur with MattF's statement about CompSci grads. I've worked with a few recently and wasn't amazed at their competence and skills either. Many of them did not seem to be able to transfer their skills to purposes ou...

Software Engineer entering Quant finance at age 37

<t>Hi PR,I can't speak fro the US, but in Europe I've lately come accross many jobs that require very solid programming skills (5-10 years of experience). I doubt a lot of 20-30somethings have that. You might be able to start off as a software developer for a hedge fund or bank and then get some qua...

Too many headhunters?

<t>Hi Steilermeier,I know what you mean. LinkedIn certainly hasn't improved my view on headhunters. I also receive mails from them 1-2x per week. Initally, I followed up on a few of those mails and I recieved job descriptions that clearly had nothing to do with my profile making it obvious that the ...

Hiding a non-relevant full-time position

<t>Hi Jointy,As far as I know all big bracket firms conduct background checks. You prior work-experience may come up (google chache). Apart from that, firms are likely to ask you what you've done in the past. If you delete all your prior internships from your CV, they might think that you never did ...

Is bigger better?

<t>Is bigger better? In some ways it is. In my experience, it's easier to move from a bigger firm to a smaller one than vice versa. I used to be in a very big firm, and the medium-sized one I work for now specifically hired people that came from mammoth firms. I also agree with the notion that bigge...

Physical commodity trading

<t>If you're looking for the big players in specific commodity markets, an easy and quick way is to check out the exchanges themselves. I work in elecricity trading and all the relevant exchanges post monthly or quarterly reports that rank the market participants according to the volume they trade. ...

How does trading at night influence life?

A good family friend worked night shifts for more than two decades. He told me that he wouldn?t recommend it. In his opinion, the social aspect was the worst. He felt he missed out on a lot of social activities.

Work in Mainland Europe or Elsewhere

I don't really care that much about the topic of compulsory military duty. I just think it's very unfair to men.

Best way to study for PRM?

totally depends on your background. The first thing I'd do is get the handbook, then you'll know which parts you'll have to study. I dug out some of my old university books for revision. That was enough.

trade capture after transaction (for energy trading companies)

Hi erisk,What kind of energy trading are you referring to? In my experience, trade capture happens immediately (i.e. a mex seconds, max 1 min later) since most systems offer straight-through-processing. 15mins does seem quite long to me.

<t>Yeah, the post should be moved to off-topic.Of course I'm aware of Human Rights Watch and Amnesty. The Report I was referring to in my post - the one that didn't contain any info on EU countries - was the annual report from Human Rights Watch. I scanned their websites, but couldn't find a publica...

Work in Mainland Europe or Elsewhere

<r>Given, the recent history of Ulster is not a showcase for Human Rights. But if we're talking Human Rights in Europe in general, consider the Roma. If you look up their recent history and even their situation today, it's not pretty. The French have basically rounded them up on camps to have them re...
