Re: Music of the Seventies, The best decennium

Gary G's favourite chord, A minor.
A minor? Doesn't he prefer them to B7?

The main thing is have you understood where the integral comes from and how that integration by parts was achieved?

I think I can hear the influence of Andrew Lloyd Webber.

What language are they screaming in?

Re: those belligerent Belarusans

Katastrofa, I can get that it's an act of aggression, perhaps even a declaration of war between EU and Belarus, but connecting it to WW3 feels to me like making a small issue into a full blown assault

Why can’t superheroes stand with their legs together? This manspreading isn’t confined to the men but includes the women and the insects.

Re: PWOQF, expected hitting time

bearish: I find exactly zero intuition in the PDE approach, although absolutely appreciate the engineering benefits of leveraging hundreds of years of research and development in terms of providing numerical solutions. The probabilistic (aka martingale) approach is a lot more intuitive, especially ...

“always maintain that propaganda has to be truthful. That doesn’t mean he didn’t lie, but it would be a pretty poor propagandist who publicly proclaimed that he was going to lie.”
I disagree with Drs Cuch and Goebbels on this.

Re: Snooker

As an American, I know this seems pretty strange but I think it's one of the cooler games out there. This is one of the reasons I don't trust your judgement on PDEs! Pure mathematicians play snooker: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/content/dam/money/2017/02/10/JS119934638_Rex-Features_Various-Snooker-1...

Re: PWOQF, expected hitting time

Cuch, For me I think of pencil-and-paper solutions of PDEs as being really, really easy to screw up. But that's just me. Think of the original solution to Black-Scholes. There are a thousand ways to goof up on the way toward transforming into the heat equation. That's interesting because I would sa...

Re: Models for Covid-19

There are many reasons. One of which is that it is their job! And that job is made harder, and more interesting, by specialists not agreeing. If it was easy, etc.

The only specialists you can rely on are economists. Because they are always wrong.

Re: PWOQF, expected hitting time

@Orbit: I'm guessing, because I haven't looked at this for decades, that on integrating the  dC/dt' bit you can add any constant you like. (Although this never gets mentioned explicitly in textbooks.) I chose -1 to simplify behaviour at infinity. Etc. Is that all you wanted? I think Alan's answer is...

Re: Nouvelles de France

I liked the French entry in the Eurovision this year. That sort of song is one of the things the French know how to do well. Caveat...never translate a French song, the lyrics never fail to be embarrassingly bad.
