Re: Does Cauchy sequence ever occur in the real world or is it all the minds of mathematicians?

And what if convergence is suboptimal? What if the superior solution is to randomly flip between the multiple optima? This is a mathematical issue (necessary and sufficient conditions) to be addressed. This has been addressed in the literature. In general, DE converges to the global optimum in cont...

Re: Does Cauchy sequence ever occur in the real world or is it all the minds of mathematicians?

A great example of how to motivate Cauchy convergence is the following: Consider using Differential Evolution (DE) to minimize a function in n space, Choose an initial population of NP individuals (vectors) all of which ultimately converge to the unknown optimum. Convergence is reached when they al...

Re: Ethics

I'd think that models are more attracted to rich financiers than to ethical decision makers! ;)
Especially those liberal arts types.
Liberal or libertine arts?

Re: Ethics

The problem with Marx is that he wasn't a mathematician.
Indeed! And those educated in the softer disciplines hate the harder disciplines because numbers remain unswayed by clever arguments.

Re: Digital format book for math, still and issue?

Wolfram then becomes a middleman? Is Microsoft the middleman if one licenses Word/Excel/Powerpoint from them? touchy today? Not particularly. I was just noticing how much of everything we do depends on third-party software sitting between ourselves and our business. It feels like a new kind of midd...

$$?
If Wolfram is following their usual business model, the software for authoring CDFs would cost $$$ but the software for reading and using a CDF would be free.

Re: Ethics

"The financial crises that have occurred since 2006 have been associated with a degradation in financial ethics. Since the teaching of derivative pricing is often undertaken in the context of abstract mathematics, the question arises of the role of mathematics in supporting financial ethics. " 2017...

Re: Ethics

I'd think that one can show that ethics may be unethical on at least two grounds. First truly ethical behavior would be paralyzing. Almost every innovation in history should have been stopped by ethical concerns (the so-called "precautionary principle") because the long-term impacts of each new inve...

Re: How many holes does a straw have?

"Rise of the Bread" could make a great horror flick!

How many holes does a baked loaf have? How many holes does an Swiss cheese have? Unsliced, the answer seems to be zero. But in 4 dimensions, the holes are in there.

I've never seen ice-in-milk either but can see how it might upset some people who are very conservative. I have seen similar non-standard practices of putting ice-cubes in white wine or beer that evoke strong feelings.
