A lot of the literature may not be free -- Heren, Platts, Argus and the other usual sources have white papers, and IB's publish primers from time to time. OIES has a bunch of free stuff on oil and gas -- not sure if coal is covered, but worth a look.

Yup, agree. Hard to define, but you know it when you see it.Marathons won't get anyone a job, but it adds a point in the 1) can plan; 2) discipline to execute plan; 3) can deliver a result despite pain, distractions, etc.

Would rather see actions (long history of the following: trading out a university dorm, coding up something to test hypotheses on freakonomics.com, writing monte carlo sims to test brain teasers, entreupreneurship, marathons, etc. etc.) rather than a speech about passion.

Ceres629,No one is going to debate the usefulness of a foreign language. I think a more fruitful (and useful to you) discussion might be the following: given limited time and limited resources, is self-study of Japanese the most optimal use of my resources, given the objective?
