Re: Classical music thread...

Not at all, there is also good music for the rest of us. kh2uZCBd5H4 Lol - I was missing the Netherlands, until you posted this! I only miss the raw herring with onions now - but back in NL next week for a few days! Nice, if you're at some point in the vicinity of the Peace Palace -and time to spar...

Re: Stupid question of the day

If you woke up tomorrow morning a billionaire, what's the most extravagantly lavish thing you'd waste some money on? I'd go to generic restaurants, give my waiter/waitress 100 dollars to send a glass of milk with ice in it to a specific table. The 100 dollars would be to keep quiet about who sent t...

Re: Stupid question of the day

I've never seen ice-in-milk either but can see how it might upset some people who are very conservative. I have seen similar non-standard practices of putting ice-cubes in white wine or beer that evoke strong feelings. Very good. The conservatism postulate would explains why both ppauper and I have...

Re: Stupid question of the day

I was just reading that a lot of people have strong feelings about other people drinking a glass of milk with icecubes in them (the combination of the two). Is that so? Why? I don't think I've ever seen anyone drink that, but I can't imagine that someone else drinking it would have any effect on m...

Re: How to avoid an argument

We can have a karma system where we up/down vote comments as relevant, and close accounts that participate in endless ad hominem attacks.

Having an argument is a good thing.

Re: what did the painter do wrong?

Can you take another picture a little bit more to the left?  The bar is occluding the bit between 1/2 and sqrt(pi). You are only a few lines of sklearn away from removing the bar yourself ! Indeed, you can fill in the blanks with a nested Generative model. First a layer that generates math statemen...

Re: Does Cauchy sequence ever occur in the real world or is it all the minds of mathematicians?

However the main point is that you can't generalize and give guarantees on a set of samples. This is the world of Statistics. This is something completely different. AFAIK Statistics doesn't operate on sequences.. You can if it is natural or artificial evolution. Populations are Cauchy sequences. T...

Re: Does Cauchy sequence ever occur in the real world or is it all the minds of mathematicians?

Big general theories come from physicists (mathematicians only prove them). Exactly! But the mathematicians can only "prove" that the theory has logical internal consistency and produce derived implications. It's not a proof that the theory is true for the physical world. The whole thing then goes ...
