Fortran

<t>Just do it in C/C++, you can always hook in to the FORTRAN libraries when needed. There's also F2C which can convert FORTRAN in to C, so you can see WTF is going on when the FORTRAN makes no sense (happened to me more than thrice). Certainly there's little or no value to FORTRAN in the financial ...

IT Bonuses

<t>Barcrap pay very low bonuses, especially in IT. I know of people who were getting 3-figure bonuses (e.g., £500) at the height of the financial crisis. Their higher salaries are less high these days, other firms have mostly caught up. If you're in IT in an investment bank then don't hope for a dec...

Job Offer Contract

I had a similar situation a couple of years back, 6 month non-compete although in that instance they would pay me (the basic salary but no bonus on top). I attempted to negotiate but they weren't willing, and we both walked away.

10yrs away - Phd or Msc

Talking my own book here but, if you did an MSc by Research, then you could either (a) exit after a year with a useful degree, if you can find a job that you like, or (b) complete a PhD in a further 2-ish years, building on your MSc research and staying with the same institution/supervisor.

moving from trading firm to asset management firm: is it good?

Do you want to be a prop trader? If so, leaving a prop trading firm to go to an asset management firm doesn't seem like a smart move to me. Also, this may be my own bias, but to me it seems easier to transfer from IT in to the "business" at a prop trading firm than at an asset manager.
