Are champagne socialists welcome on this thread?

Just want to make sure before I dip my bejeweled toes in the water.

Re: New book on machine learning

Looks like a LARGE Johnny Walker. Hmmm. I attended a real single malt Scotch tasting recently and the training set included Glenfiddich and The Balvenie. Both a deep amber hue - TB a bit darker and more mysterious... Long road trip today so no drinking and driving! But no problem to think about cla...

Have a big tea party with Alice, Beatrix, and all of their friends.

Once rubber duck meets Dormouse and Jemima Puddle Duck...

Re: Political Correctness is Dead! Time to say what you really think

I prescribe teddy bears for both of you. Ringing in ears and more generalized derangement (from constant exposure to VERY LOUD music!) should stop when you are holding one of these cuties. : ) http://www.steiffbear.us/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/steiff_ferdinand_teddy_bear_ean_036941.jpg Now I will h...

I think people have misunderstood what I wrote!
Don’t get all prickly now.

We understand what you wrote.

But if you want some insulted satisfaction, here you go.

You, sir, are an autumn bramble.... and winter is coming. : D
Cool. "slightly inebriated" means those guys had good fun.  D Did you like the pipes?  My grandad was major of a pipe band. Any Scottish harps. No place like Yemen! Pristine.. www.youtube.com/watch?v=BUx8ntCzo-w
Of course - those bagpipes get into the heart and soul. Loved it! We a...

Re: Political Correctness is Dead! Time to say what you really think

Help for the needy - badinage. and short story -  Last weekend my sister and I went to the Highland Games far north of here. At the point where the massed bands were getting ready to come down the mountain (fantastic!), a really large crowd gathered at the parade field. Some folks had been drinking ...

Re: What is democracy?

One more for the library:

A Treatise on Government - Aristotle

https://www.gutenberg.org/files/6762/6762-h/6762-h.htm

And no, I would never confuse a quoted poem (or song from YouTube!) as a proposal to me.

Besides, I am strictly against poaching!

Re: What is democracy?

I read The Republic years ago. That was when I still had respect for "thinkers." Now I don't have respect for thinkers, they rarely tell me things I don't instinctively know already. They just give them fancy names. My respect is saved for people who run small businesses, who have to deal on a dail...

Re: What is democracy?

I vote Yes to having a Yes/No vote. But I expect to be over-ruled. Best of three?
I will rephrase the question and then consent to the binary:

“Democracy is being hotly contested by both sides.”

Yes.

Re: What is democracy?

May we just have a simple "yes" or "no"? Having some dusty old books nearby could be useful. Modern democracy is being strongly tested in the US and the UK by many sides these days, but perhaps it will be better understood and maybe even improved in the end. It’s a messy process - the founding fath...
