<t>"Cost" has several factors, the biggest is normally people not hardware or software, so the easiest option is typically the cheapest. Also thje "real time"-ness of the calculations matter, are you seeking out a set of stratgies to run with ?That's a big batch job that requires one styack, wheres r...

Economics of Climate Change

<t>India has no shortage of water at all, nor indeed does at the opposite end of the economic spectrum does California. Both have corrupt governments that buy votes through subsidised water use. OK India is more corrupt, but it is the same structure. If water is priced properly by a market rather than...

Advice about getting into quant-style roles

<t>I coworote the careers bit of the PW FAQ, you've already read it.In some ways CV are like program code...HR parses it for keywords and does a syntax check, you've passed that. What we have now is optimisation and you need to stand out, so it follows at this point that my advice must be generic, bu...

Advice about getting into quant-style roles

<t>You are in what I wrote in the careers part of the FAQ as the kissing frogs phase in order to find a prince.Too little data for me to make any solid recommendation, but obviously your resume is OK for HR people, so it is either the interview or the next phase of the filtration that fails you.One ...

"The collapse of the .net ecosystem"

<t>Although I have written a formal opinion for The Register that Windows has more yesterdays than tommorrows these things are slow.I also say this about Java, so one must be careful about where to jump and the right time scale to exit. Many argue with me about Java, because they see the truly vast a...

What sort of maths is needed for algorithmic execution quant developer?

Algo exection is heavily driven by market impact modelling, indeed some strategies are based pretty much wholly on this.Jim Gatheral and Dan diBartolomeo have written good stuff on this, search for them and you will see where any holes in your current maths need to be plugged

Potential employer wants confirmation of current salary?

<t>We also need to look at the microstructure of how pay evolves. If you come in at the top of a scale, it is much harder to move up since you have to be promoted up a grade to get into the new band. This isn't just a work performance thing and certainly nothing to do with market forces, but a functio...

Potential employer wants confirmation of current salary?

<t>In general, Hansi is right...It is possible that they want to use the pay slip as part of some internal wrangling and part of the shit you have to put up with in government service is that HR departments are far more powerful yet far less competent than in the private sector. It may be that the ma...

Hedge fund IT Intern - worth taking?

Are they paying you ?It's not just the money, it is a signal of their estimation of you .As you say database migraton is not sexy and I'm not sure how one becomes "high performing" at it, in order to get hired.

URGENT SUGGESTION REQUIRED on career decision

It is very rare for the client to demand an answer so quickly, this is an agent trying to bully. Especially in August when things slow down.

Should i make a call?

Certainly a polite and gently enthusiastic letter is worth the effort.A useful analogy for of job hunting is hunting. No hunter ever caught/shot better by getting over excited. You pick a good target, prepare, shoot then reload. Shouting at the bird won't make it easier to hit.

"The collapse of the .net ecosystem"

<t>He's not just disgruntled he's working for a competitor...The other thing is that programming is now spread over rather more languages and ecosystems. The number of languages you need to reach a given % of jobs has gone up, though that does not itself fully explain the curve. One thing to bear in m...

HFT in Python?

It may be the case that in a HFT shop you spend more time in Python than C++ since a large % of the effort is researching and testing, ie stuff where the ratio of programming time to execution time leans more towards speeding up the researcher people not the machine execution time.

Post-employment convenant

<t>The trick in this is twofold 1: define "competitors", either by name or business sector.2: Keep looking for other jobs, since without an alternative your negotating posture is weak.Be clear that this is a negotiation and if I were your HH I'd be doing that, I trust yours is ?MiloRambaldi, I am no...
