Body Language/Facial expression reading for interviews

I'm guessing the original resource is Ekman's work on facial expressions (as he advises Lie to Me) - been there, done that, it might work for some but found coaching superior - maybe fund someone through toastmasters or if you know any competent HR professionals (they do exist).

Can't be as bad as applying for a job as a special needs tutor and misspelling "Kind Regards" with a 't' in the wrong place...

<t>Wording is confusing and muddled for ppl not into football - I'd polish it.Depends on what answer you want - the draw has been made so it's no longer probabilistic. PSG will play the German team Leverkusen, so the answer is now 0. Prior to the draw it was number of non-German and non-English team...

Alternative careers in biological sciences rather than finance?

<t>I'm looking at Big Data and have read Medical Statistics books in my search and spoken to ppl in the field - the math isn't very different to quant math, just not as hardcore. Main thing is to understand your distributions and the ability to think in terms of data and meaning and how to use in pr...

<t>QuoteOriginally posted by: CuchulainnBut the topics are very one-sided, I have to say.I'll second that - the topics represent at most 1/3 of what I'd do in any given year in my undergrad. The rest would be a combination of mechanics and coding related subjects.Goes without saying, but in some ins...

Quant career for a non-quant background

How to evaluate a new job offer

<t>Quant net seems to have a lot of innane stuff like this and I sometimes wonder about the "you did maths, brilliant, your sorted!" attitude of the site (although many members seem to have the lowdown). However, innane as this is, a lot of grads will be listening to illogical and outmoded crap from ...

Quant career for a non-quant background

<t>I'd try and do anything that results in a solid project in quant finance - internship or getting published on quantlib.org could help, but either way is very tough even if you have a large body of work on maths or physics in your CS PhD. Either way is tough while doing a PhD and any alternative w...

<t>One question I would ask other members is will the fact that it's for an internship make it easier for the OP?Also, out of curiousity and as my career went away from being a quant and I wouldn't know, are there any "milkround" graduate schemes for quants? I think the OP is right that there rarely...

<t>Just guessing but I'd code the maths you're quite confident about. Wouldn't go too deep in, but do what you can in the next few days. Could easily be just a chat, but if it gets technical show an attention to detail and more your line of thinking than a "right" result. Also from personal experienc...

Developer -> Business Analyst = Kiss of Death ?

<t>In very general terms BA roles will only work out if you have good communication skills. My experience with BA roles in lending finance (Corporate and Project Finance) is that you could get into a role like that at a junior level if you're friendly and fairly normal socially and have the technica...

<t>Thanks for that, certainly gives me a bit of hope.As regards going back living with my Dad the problem is that it involves going back to Ireland where I have always found job markets to be 3rd rate for mathematicians, even during the so-called boom time. It just seems impractical to go back when ...

<t>jthomas,Thanks for your reply, having read your reply again I think you understood where I'm coming from. I suppose understanding SAS might in theory give me a chance to get a data manager role, albeit against biostats MSc grads as competition. Thing is how would be best to get that kind of role?...
