there are futures contracts on the CME
Indeed! But aren't those secured by US laws and the US court system rather than magic anonymized cryptoconstructs?

Re: If you are bored with Deep Networks

I'm not saying animals have superior vision per se only that they have access to superior training data. There is much we don't know about how humans and animals learn to see. But it is clear that they fail to learn to see if only exposed to disembodied snapshots the way current AI systems are. Even...

Re: If you are bored with Deep Networks

I wonder about that too! But somehow, humans and other animals cope with that. Humans and animals get a staggering amount of data just by wandering around their environment and interacting with things. The "frames" of the eye's video stream may not be truly independent samples but they ar...

Re: Is bitcoin crashing?

<snip> I don't think you can do anything like an IR swap with bit coin yet because I don't think bit coin (or Hayek Money) has any intrinsic mechanisms for lending the currency.  <snip> Can't you agree to transfer a bitcoin for a specified length of time? OK it might be better if the settlement was...

Re: If you are bored with Deep Networks

@Cuchilainn: "This probably means that the problem is "ill-posed" in some way." Sometimes it's easier to use a scotch tape rather than shift a paradigm :-) Let's take Goodfellow's adversarial example page 261 Problem space: it is a panda even when the image is perturbed by a sma...

Re: Chatroom

I need to buy a new PC laptop. 14" Screen or so. For web surfing, running jupyter notebooks and other computer programming tasks, and a bit of database related stuff. Rather mid/low price range. I haven't read anything on PC components/laptop performances for decades (litterally). I'm thus fee...

Re: If you are bored with Deep Networks

Another crazy question. I'm wondering about the opposite to what you wrote about the proximity of the classification boundary: your input does not cover the full space - the points are probably denser in some regions than others and there are empty areas in this space. Based on my understanding of ...

Re: Stupid question of the day

There are flu strains that cross over from birds to farm mammals and humans but I don't know about cats.

There's at least one parasite (Toxoplasma gondii) that has a cat-prey lifecycle but I don't if it is found in birds.

Finally pigeons (or their droppings) are associated with histoplasmosis.

Re: Machine learning for fun, to pay your rent or whatever

Given all the concern about whether popular ML packages really work This is outside project scope. This will NOT be part of the project; the students are NOT beta-testers. They can do plumbing work in a later capacity after they have really understood when it does and does not work. Rewriting all t...

Re: New 2nd Edition - The Complete Guide to Option Pricing Formulas + CD-ROM by Espen Gaarder Haug

I think that you perceive people getting old is actually more to do with your perception than with the arrow of time. We exist in a very very strange area of the universe, most of it is extremely linear and uniform. The odd hydrogen atom here or there, and then a huge load of hydrogen atoms and hel...

Re: Machine learning for fun, to pay your rent or whatever

Question: what would be a doable 3-month MSc  project on ML and finance? No use of packages, but the student builds the (mini) system from the ground up?  Why reinvent the wheel? Next, you'll insist that the student design a CPU rather than buy an off-the-shelf computer. Given all the concern about...

Re: what did the painter do wrong?

5. Find the last digit of pi If you compute the volume of Torricell's trumpet you get [$]\sum\limits_{n = 1}^\infty 1/n^2 = \pi^2/6[$] It's a start. But not for fixed-price projects. How about making rotini's trumpet on x = 1 to 0 with central axis of something like y = sin(1/x), z = cos(1/x), and ...
