I'd venture a guess that Java is pretty much on par in terms of use when compared to C++ in the financial industry outside of the dedicated quant space which isn't that big on C++ anymore compared to 10-15 years ago.

Go talk to your thesis supervisor for advice. Going with something completely off the book may be hard because of lack of access to reviewers and may drag down your grade if it's one of those academia vs practice not agreeing topics.
