Re: PWOQF, expected hitting time

From BS to heat Pde https://www.math.tamu.edu/~stecher/425/Sp12/blackScholesHeatEquation.pdf on the 2nd line stating upfront that [$]V(0,t) = 0[$] is so wrong. What have we here, laddie? Mysterious scribblings? A secret code? Three pages later we encounter an answer that is off by an odd factor of ...

Re: No new C++ until 2010, no concepts

Ah - that clears it right up! I promise to do all my PDE work in C++20 from now on.

Re: I'm a Punkrocker Yes I Am

Did any prisoners escape from prison after the performance? Apparently about a dozen did escape from the mental hospital.  "You know I love you, But you've got a hell of a lot to learn about Rock 'n' Roll!" Looked it up and no, not after that concert, which was 1968. Folsom State Prison -...

Re: Random Republican WINGNUTS (or RRWs as they are affectionately known as)

That’s fair. At least sort of. I did add the parenthetical comment, but absolutely believe that a majority of the respondents would include keeping slaves as part of “the traditional American way of life” that they would like to kill for (not, mind you, die for). Like it was written into the constit...

Re: Random Republican WINGNUTS (or RRWs as they are affectionately known as)

In a recent poll by the American Enterprise Institute (a right wing think tank), 56% of Republicans supported the use of violence to protect the traditional (white) American way of life.

What do you find especially tragic about it? That evil scientists killed her?

Re: PWOQF, expected hitting time

The main thing is have you understood where the integral comes from and how that integration by parts was achieved?
Yes. Yes, I do.
I think the proper line is “Thank you sir! May I have another?”

Re: Trump -- the last 100 days

So, with a special grand jury convened by the Manhattan DA, the likelihood of a criminal indictment of the miscreant is ramping up. These things still take an awful long time though. He might well die a more or less natural death before being done with the appeals of his judgment.

Re: Random Republican WINGNUTS (or RRWs as they are affectionately known as)

Bleading head republicans, in an effort to kill each other (which I applaud and support) are increasingly banning the use, let alone requirement for any purpose, of covid vaccine documentation. This of course is going to have the side effect of killing local normal people, as well as keeping many of...

Re: Random Republican WINGNUTS (or RRWs as they are affectionately known as)

The governor of Florida just signed a bill imposing pretty serious fines on any social media company suspending the account of any Florida republican running for state or local office. That’s a very Florida thing to do... Oh, and of course, there is a special exemption for media companies that also ...

Re: PWOQF, expected hitting time

One doesn’t have to work too hard to find cases in the forum where an exact solution is presented, only to be met with a wide-eyed, slack-jawed response of “but, but it’s not a PDE!” I find exactly zero intuition in the PDE approach, although absolutely appreciate the engineering benefits of leverag...

Re: PWOQF, expected hitting time

Alan/Cuch:
Honestly, with greatest respect to the PDE gurus here, these days I generally do anything in the world to avoid solving PDEs, and usually try martingale approaches. Just my 2 cents, ha ha.
BTW Alan your link is really great.
I reached that point approximately 30 years ago.

Re: Worthwhile companies, do they exist?

Indeed and I told them straight up, that I knew the leadership wasn't all that good. They didn't pick me, but they were very very helpful and pleasant people.
Now, honesty may be the best policy, but unless you’re interviewing with Ray Dalio, you may want to go light on the radical transparency.

Re: Worthwhile companies, do they exist?

Just briefly reviving this thread. The four companies Alan mentions are interesting. My investment portfolio is pretty much divided between Vanguard funds and ETFs held at Schwab. I do most of my (admittedly limited) shopping via Amazon, and the bulk of my computing and communication on Apple produc...

Re: Finland, land of erotic dancing

A meaningful joke I heard from a Finnish person today: A Russian soldier at Helsinki airport's passport control. - Name? - Vladimir Petrov [or whatever] - Occupation? - No occupation! Just visiting! They are getting nervous. Just don't accost the Finns in the forest! Only the Finns and Japanese hav...
