Width and Depth in Excel

April 21st, 2004, 11:42 am

I had an Excel file with a dozen sheets or so each with a lot of calculations. Each feed into the next and there was some loopback. Recalc took a little over a minute and a half. I got the tip to put everything on one sheet vertically and recalc takes a fraction of a second. Is that typical of multi sheet models? Or is it due to the loopback?

Even after you have optimised the sheet calculation sequence by renaming the sheets there are still speed gains to be had by merging sheets, particularly with VLOOKUP.Also the need to optimise the sheet calculation sequence has lessened significantly with excel 2002 and excel 2003.for more info on excel calculation speed see Optimising Speed
