encryption

Does anyone have a pdf document they would be willing to share which describes encryption for the internet. I just want a basic understanding how hte encryption works so I know in a general detail how to make my internet as secure as possible

A lot depends on the platform in which you are working. Some excellent resources for IIS (Windows) are available at the Microsoft site.Also you need to be sure on what you need securing - just the communication between you and the server, or your application, or the data behind the application etc.

What, wireless router encryption or RSA prime number key exchange stuff? Encryption in general?There is a lot of different encryption schemes in use.

One great resource is NSA Security GuidesI'm not sure that encryption provides that much security unless you are very diligent about avoiding malware.

If when you say 'my internet' you mean your LAN, then get familiar with ports & packets, and play with utilities like nmap. All the encryption in the world on said packets isn't worth a damn if you have a leaky vessel. Besides playing with nmap, you might try nessus. good luck!

basically I'm looking for something generic that gives a broad overview of encryption techniques used when sending /receiving email and other ways to prevent someone from hacking in to your system..Like I say something basic tohugh. ie a free version of an idiots guide to encryption on the web....etc

PGP have a broad overview of encryption here - http://www.pgpi.org/doc/pgpintro/In a previous life I worked along with many security specialists securing systems that mattered - it's not something you can really pick up from a book, if whatever you are working on is important you will need a third party consultant to help you out.
